Validation issues XP Home OEM RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am currently running a non-MS OS on my computer, however it came with Windows XP Home preinstalled from the manufacturer. I had used the computer for a period of time with the valid product key, so it should be registered to me personally. The issue that I had last time I tried to install the OS was I kept getting Invalid Product Key messages and being prompted to call Microsoft to resolve. This provided a good opportunity for me to dabble in some other operating systems, however I am in need of running XP Home on the computer again. Being as the license key is for a preinstalled version and no software is supplied by the hardware manufacturer, am I able to use any XP home cd to reinstall the OS as long as I use my valid product key from the bottom of the computer case?

Like I said, last time I attempted this, I ran into problems. What am I needing to do here? Thanks.

In order to use the Product Key on the presumably genuine XP Home Ed Certificate of Authenticity affixed to your computer, you will have to use one of the following media:

    1.  The Recovery CD or Operating Reinstallation CD intended for use on your exact make and model of computer that may be avilable from the original computer manufacturer.  Please contact the Tech Support or Customer Service 800 numbers of the computer manufacturer to inquire if these CDs are available for purchase.

    2.  The generic genuine Microsoft systembuilder/OEM hologrammed CD for XP Home Ed.  This CD will accept the PK on your CoA for Setup to complete initial installation, but will not automatically activate over the internet.  To activate choose the Telephone Activation option in the Activation Wizard.

Note that you cannot use any other computer manufacturers' Recovery or OS Reinstallation CDs, and that you cannot use any other genuine Microsoft media besides the systembuilder/OEM CD.
