Win 7 Ultimate suddenly not genuine. Support says I need to reinstall Windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • I, like many others, have started receiving the message that Windows was not genuine. My PC is an MSI laptop that I purchased at Fry's early in the summer that came with Win 7 home premium.  On July 23rd I upgraded the laptop to Ultimate (32 bit) via the Anytime upgrade with a key from my Technet subscription.

    I contacted Microsoft support and they acknowledge that my key is valid and can't explain what the problem is.  The support rep said something about a possible corrupt registry entry.  He said my only solution was to REINSTALL WINDOWS!  I believe I was given the "cure all" solution so as to quickly end the support call.   I can certainly reinstall Windows but it's a huge waste of time for a corrupt registry entry.  Is there any other method to correct this injustice?

    Here is my diagnostic report....

  • The following entries reflect file corruption of some type. Please see the steps pasted below, if it does not work follow the final link in the instructions to start a no cost support incident.

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\windows\system32\en-US\sppcommdlg.dll.mui[6.1.7600.16385], Hr = 0x80004005

    Tampered File: %systemroot%\system32\sppcommdlg.dll|sppcommdlg.dll.mui

    HrOffline: 0x8004FE22

    SFC/system restore

    type cmd in the search box of the start menu, right click on the icon that appears and type sfc /scannow without the qoutes and press enter, allow SFC to run, reboot when directed. If you get any error messages write them down exactly as they appear. After rebooting go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and attempt to validate.

    If that does not work then type system restore in the search box, click on the resulting program and follow the wizards prompts to restore to a previous point prior to the non-genuine status.

    If that does not work then start a no cost wga tech support incident at the following link http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactwga

  • Ok, I took step 1.  It failed as you can see below.  I'll need to wait to do steps 2 or 3 until I can physically access the PC...
