  • Hi All

We have one PC that has now died, so we took the hard disk out as we need the data and installed in a different PC, it was left for some time now we cant login as windows XP is not activated, connected to internet but it wont connect to activate probably due to nic drivers. We have the original product ID sticker from the old PC.  What is the easiest way to register and get it working in this different PC,  if we call Microsoft what do they need to do, is it automated and we can call at any time ?  At the moment we can only login safe mode.  This is XP SP3.

    Thanks

The original XP computer has an OEM License – such licenses cannot be transferred to another PC under any circumstances.
For what version and edition of Windows is the new PC licensed? (if at all)

If the new PC also has an XP License of the same kind as the old (i.e. Home or Pro) then you can change the Key to the one on the new PC – but you may need to reset the activation window first, and/or use telephone activation.
