Migrating WHS to a new computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a new computer server to install WHS on, which is replacing an existing computer. I already have 3 networked computers on the existing WHS.
The new WHS computer will have a different name than the existing.
I'll do a full backup of all data to a removable hard drive to restore to the new machine. I won't be reusing any of the existing drives
After I install the WHS software, the next step is to install the console  on each machine, but the console is already installed for the existing.
Whats the recommended way to set up the consoles for the new WHS computer?

  • Migrating the clients is quite simple:
On each client, just run Discovery.exe, located in %Program Files%\Windows Home Server.
Connector setup will be re-run; simply point the client at the new server.

Of course, you should only do this after you have fully completed setup of your new server, including installing all updates for it.

    Chris

In addition to what Chris said, moving your license from one PC (read mobo) to another is not allowed when using an OEM product.  MS can keep you from activating the license a second time.  Having said that, other users have been able to do what you want to do.
