Transfer of retail XP Pro license; obtaining replacement disks

Question
-
The registered license holder of retail edition Windows XP Pro claims to have lost his installation disks and certificate. He says he can give me the "license key" via email, because he recorded that information when he first installed XP Pro. Can he transfer his license to me by sending a letter to the appropriate department at Microsoft? If so, how then may I obtain replacement disks?Sunday, May 2, 2010 4:41 AM

Hello Vermonty,
There is no method for transfering retail licenses for Microsoft software other than what is spelled out in the End User Licensing Agreement (excerpted below). So, the person who wants to sell the license to you has to somehow un-lose their software and the Proof Of License label (the yellow-orange label that has the product key printed on it).
If the seller contacts Microsoft using the link that Carey posted, they still won't be able to get anything from Microsoft because they do not have the Certificate of Authenticity, which is needed to get a replacement installation disc.
If you are shopping for a Genuine license for XP Pro, stick with established retailers. The chances of getting Genuine XP from unknown sellers on Amazon, eBay, Craigs List and the like are slim and getting slimmer every day.
13. END USER PROOF OF LICENSE. If you acquired the Software on a compact disc or other media, a genuine Microsoft “Proof of License” label with a genuine copy of the software identifies a licensed copy of the Software. To be valid, the label must appear on Microsoft software packaging. If you receive the label separately, it is invalid. You should keep the packaging that has the label on it to prove that you are licensed to use the Software.
14. SOFTWARE TRANSFER. Internal. You may move the Software to a different Workstation Computer. After the transfer, you must completely remove the Software from the former Workstation Computer. Transfer to Third Party. The initial user of the Software may make a one-time permanent transfer of this EULA and Software to another end user, provided the initial user retains no copies of the Software. This transfer must include the Software and the Proof of License label. The transfer may not be an indirect transfer, such as a consignment. Prior to the transfer, the end user receiving the Software must agree to all the EULA terms.
