  • Hi Jeff,
we are now on the point, on which I would recommend a server reinstallation, if nobody else has an idea.
Maybe you could also register on Connect as outlined in the sticky thread on top of this forum and create a bug report, so that the developers can take a look into the issue.

  • Hi Jeff,
disabling a service, which is a core part of the Windows Home Server functionality, is not a good idea at all.
Since you already digged into the event log - have there been other events before pointing out issues with the disk or the network?
Is that McAfee Total protection service installed on your Windows Home Server? If yes, is that software designed for Windows Home Server explicitely? In case it is not, you should uninstall it immediatly, since software, which does not know anything about WHS (especially if it is so deep involved as security suites are) can heavily interfer with the functionality of Windows Home Server.
If this is not the case, try to uninstall the November Update KB957825 via Control Panel on the Home Server. This will restore the former version. If this works, you can apply the upgrade again.

  • Hi Olaf McAfee Total protection service is installed on my Windows Home Server it cam ewith the box .Everything was working fine until yesterday. I have uninstalled the November Update KB957825 as you suggested and re-enabled the transport service this made no difference - I am still getting the  error Home Server TRansport Service Encountered a Problems and needed to close

    What next?

    Thanks

  • Hi Jeff,
(I still do not like Mc Afee software on the home server, but this seems to play no role in this case, because we would read more if an update of that application would have caused issues.)
So let me fire some more questions:
Did you install any 3rd party applications or add ins on your home server recently?
If you start the service manually on the server (Start/Run services.msc) does the service crash immediatly or would it keep running in this case?
I have seen crashes of that file reported in context with a damaged backup database, but this usually was tied to other errors (i.e. whsbackup.exe crashing as well). In such situation deleting the entire backup database and redoing the backups was the workaround, if the Repair button in the console could not fix the behavior.

Perhaps your primary drive is failing.  Did you try running chkdsk /r on the OS volume and see if there were any errors?

Hi Olaf they only thing I did was try to add the IP address of my Linksys Media Device to the media devices - I removed that immediately. As I said before all everything was fine until last night.Running the service manually makes it crash right away. I have to disable it as I keep getting the error messages.
Interesting the whsbackup.exe is not running properly as I cannot see my backups . I did the repair on the backup it stated it worked but when I went to the console, it still say the backup setting are not available

Perhaps your primary drive is failing.  Did you try running chkdsk /r on both volumes (C and D) and see if there were any errors?

Is it safe to do this when I get a message saying that it can only run chkdsk when I retstart?

  • Yes, checking the system disk takes some time and requires a reboot.
This FAQ shows a method to check all drives in the server at once.

  • Well running chkdsk came up with no errors or problems. I removed  the PP1 and rebooted - that made no difference either
so basically. THe server is running, I can RDP to it and I can "see'' the drives from a desktop machine.
The problems is I have had to disable the Tranportservice. When it is enabled it keeps failing.

I see the error in the application log. THe other two errors, the addkey and process Transport error appear in the Home server log
I cannot run any backups as that service has shut down as well.  So I am still no further ahead
I really do not want to do a restore as everything else appears to be fine

  • Uninstalling PP1 brings nothing good, unless you reinstall it immediatly. Since whsbackup relies on the transport service, it is no wonder that it does not run.
The last thing you can attempt besides a server reinstall is to delete the backup database (all client backups) by doing following procedure:
Either try to get and install the old Windows Home Server Toolkit 1.0 and select Reset database, or you can try to delete all files in D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} via Windows Explorer from the servers desktop.

If you cannot delete all files in that folder, there may be invalid reparse points. In this case open a command prompt and enter following commands:

    net stop pdl
    net stop whsbackup
    d:
    cd  \folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}
for %i in (*) do fsutil reparsepoint delete %i

Check also, if there are more files in
    d:\DE\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\
    c:\fs\<volumemountpoint>\DE\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\
and delete the files as well. You need to enable Show hidden files and folders in folder options to see those folders.

After finishing this perform a reboot on the server.

Olaf thanks again - I tried this and then restarted the transport service and the TRansport service started to cycle between started. stopped and starting the event viewer showed the same Faulting application TransportService.exe, in the application log and the Home Server viewed show the two errors "Unexpected error 0x57 from AddKey:" and "Process TransportService failed at d:\wssg_src\whs_pp1\qhs\src\transport\shared\transportlib\reghelper.cpp(446)."
THe transport service kept cycling and I had disble it.
I am wondering what AddKey does and or if there is something ammis in the registrt?

    Jeff,

Did HP resolve this for you? Also what version of the Connector is the Client PC running?

    Thank you
