Cannot Install Live Mesh Beta on Vista Business 64-bit SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I had the previous version of Live Mesh installed on my desktop machine (Vista Business 64-bit)...it worked fine.  Then the Beta update was pushed out.   I told it to Update...said it was already up to date, but it didn't actually do any updating.   So I uninstalled it.   Now I can't install the new version!

When I tell it to ADD DEVICE from the Live Desktop , it chugs around for awhile, then the UNINSTALL LIVE MESH dialog comes up and it uninstalls what it just installed!

Then after I get the blue Mesh window saying that it has uninstalled the Live Mesh software, I get a dialog box that says:

    "Installer Encountered Errors
    [80040154] Class Not Registered"

I have no idea what Class is not registered, and have been trying this for 3 days now without success!

    HELP!

  • I had similiar problem. I find out that i have disabled Windows Firewall service and this makes impossible to install Live Mesh. After i enable that service i could install Live Mesh without problem.

    Maybe this will help somebody.

  • Thank you for your patience as we continue to investigate this issue. To determine the cause of this behavior, we need to ask you to provide us with your log files.  To help track your issue, we ask that you send those logs to the following email address: lmprev@microsoft.com

To create the log files for Live Mesh reporting:
    1. Click "Start."
    2. Select "All Programs" and look for the "Live Mesh" folder.
    3. Click "Collect Live Mesh Logs."
    4. Your logs will be bundled together in a cab file now located on your desktop. This file contains the information we need to resolve your concern.
Please note that even though the cab file contains all of the necessary information, our support tool will only accept the file in zip format.  Please ensure you follow the rest of the steps to zip the file before sending.
    5. Zip the cab file.  There are many zipping utilities out there but the most common is Win Zip.  If you have Win Zip, right -click on the file and click "Add to Zip." The file will be saved in your desktop, then click "Add."
    6. Open a new e-mail message and attach your "LiveMeshLogs.zip" file located on your desktop
    7. Send it to lmprev@microsoft.com.

I will provide an update as soon as we receive your logs.

    Thank you again,

  • Hi Nadia,

Thanks for the quick reply!  The problem is that Live Mesh automatically uninstalls itself during the installation process, so I don't even have a Live Mesh folder in the Start menu.

    Hi Eric,

Have you tried the suggestions in this sticky?  Also, can you look to see if you have a Servicing log?  If you do, you can email it to lmprev@microsoft.com, with a description of the problem you're having.  Here are the instructions for finding the Servicing log:

If you run into an error during the installation of the Live Mesh softwarea Servicing.log will be created.  To get this log:

    1.  Click Start
    2.  If you are using Vista, type Servicing* in the search bar. If you are using XP, click Search and then type Servicing*
    3.  In the search results you will see Servicing.log or Servicing[0000].log depending on where the installation failed.

To go directly to the file, the Servicing log is in INSTALLDIR\Setup\Servicing.log or %temp%\Live Mesh\Servicing[0000].log if Live Mesh was uninstalled/rolled back during a failed installation.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Ben,

    I tried the sticky...no go.

None of those methods of installation work.   Those registry entries do not exist.

There are no servicing logs on the machine.

    Stumped,

    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

If the install switches and/or registry entries in the sticky don't work, and you have no logs of any kind, I think we need to have you work more directly with someone to troubleshoot this.  Please go ahead and send email to lmprev@microsoft.com, and our support personnel will work with you.  Please include a detailed description of the steps you've tried so far to give us a place to start.

Hopefully we'll be able to get Live Mesh working for you soon.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Miroslav,

Thank you!   That was the problem.   I activated the Windows Firewall service, ran the livemesh install, and it worked!

What is your specific problem when installing? What error are you encountering?

  • It says:
"Installer encountered errors. Class not registered. Error 80040154."

  • Do you have any services disabled, such as the Firewall service noted in the post marked as answer in this thread?

Does the PC exhibit any other issues?

  • Looks like live mesh now utilizes windows update agent to get updates, if it can't get the newest update it fails and uninstalls....  enable windows update (if you're corporate policy prohibits it, go here: http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/2005-12/msg00566.htmlt), then get the newest windows update agent...  I just did all the above and it's installing for me now... as I type this it's installing, ok it's done...

  • I did all 3 suggestions on this page and it finally installed after receiving the "Installer encountered errors. Class not registered. Error 80040154."

    1. Enabled Windows Firewall, which as a corporate user we have this disabled
    2. Ticked "Automatically detect settings" under IE..Tools\Internet Options\Connections\LAN Settings

As I was still receiving this error I tried "Dean in NJ"'s suggestion of installing the latest Windows Updater, which as a corpoarte user we have this disabled, as a patch management server deploys these.

    3. Went to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and installed the latest updater. I didn't have to install any suggested updates, just the updater.

After these 3 steps I successfully installed Live Mesh.

For those Microsoft\Live Mesh moderators here is the entry in my ServicingMSI.log where it appears to fail. It doesn't seem to be informative about it's issue with the Windows Updater being out of date.

  • Received same error when installing on Windows XP.

    Class not registered (80040154)

Opening the help file and finding the (80040154) error in the search shows that this is usually because UAC is not enabled or that your are not a Administrator on the computer.

Help file may need to be updated for the things listed here. Like Gavin after installing the new Windows Update updater it no longer error-ed out.

Thank you everyone that helped figure this out cause i didn't want to have to TS it more :)

Other than that Great Product!!!      :)
