De duplicating files RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can I use SyncToy to remove file duplications ?

I am particularly thinking of photographs where I have a number of folders that I am sure have photos in common but not all of them. There are too many to check individually.

If I sync FolderA > FolderX then FolderB > FolderX etc... will I end up with a single instance of each photo in FolderX ?

Hope you can help. Regards, John

  • Hi -

It should work assuming that the files in FolderA and FolderB are truely identical. This means that the files should have the same CreationTimes/LastWriteTimes/names. Normally you will find this is not the case ( a simple copy for example will set different creation times on the files) so you may not really be able to use SyncToy for this scenario.
