    After installation of recent Windows updates, I started receiving failure notices for Genuine Advantage on my refurbished HP Pavilion. This computer was used for some time with my old version of Office Professional 2000. My former employer installed Office Enterprise 2007, over the Office 2000 version and it is the 2007 version which is failing Genuine Advantage. As I am a student, I purchased, downloaded and installed Office 2007 Ultimate from Ultimate Steal. ON opening the new version of Office, the failures continued. I followed the instructions given other on this forum, to uninstall via control panel. neither Office Enterprise nor Office Ultimate appeared in the applet, but office 2000 and many updates and service packs did. I did not get a removal option for Office 2000. I backed out all of the service packs and updates, thinking this would give me removal options for the Office packages. it did not.  I rebooted twice [the first reboot took over an hour] and found the option to remove Ultimate 2007 was available and opening office apps continued to show Genuine advantage errors I did, however, get the option to remove Office Ultimate, and did so, followed by 2 reboots again. I then installed Office Ultimate to a new directory. I was then able to open Office apps without warning messages. I did not remove the old Office directory.
    Now, 2 days later, I am once again receiving error messages on opening Office apps, but not a "two day" warning as I was initially. Control panel is back to showing Office 2000, with no removal option and the service pack/update options, most with removal options. Please advise how I may proceed to ensure my new Office applications can be fully validated and rendered functional.

    The report is showing only the nongenuine installation of Office Enterprise 2007 as being currently installed.

    I think the ideal course of action at this point would be backing up and offloading your data, then doing a clean installation of Windows XP Pro and the new Office Ultimate onto the computer.

    Understanding that may not be feasible, the next best idea IMO would be to do what you can to remove all the remnants of the various Office installations from the computer, then try a clean installation of your Office Ultimate.

    This MS KB provides instructions on how to do a manual uninstallation of Office 2007:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218.  At the top of that article is a link to another article that has an MS FixIt utility that does the manual steps for you.

    Here is a link to an article that describes a removal wizard included in the Office XP resource kit that is supposed to be able to remove Office 2000:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/orkXP/HA011362891033.aspx

    After removing what you can of all the Office installations, be aware that even after installation of the new and presumably genuine Office Ultimate, you may continue to see nongenuine notices.  This is because leftover license files from these old installations may not have been removed, and the OGA Notifier utility will see nongenuine license files and will display nongenuine notices.  In such case, the info in these two articles will help you look for and delete the old license files:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919895 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/

  • Thank you for your very comprehensive and timely respons and instructions. I seem to have one last hurdle with which I hope you can help. I believe I've dug out the old installations using a combination of the manual procedures and the wizards you've pointed me to. However, I'm unable to install the new Office Ultimate which previously installed. I've tried from 2 CD's I burned before the problem began as well as from a portable hard drive. The downloaded installation file has disappeared from my hard drive, presumably as a result of using one of the removal tools. When I try to reinstall Office, I get the following error mesage "Microsoft Office Ultimate encountered an error during setup" and the installation stops. I've discovered one Office entry in both control panel and appwiz. It is Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack2 [SP2] and neither control panel or appwiz will allow it's removal, returning the error "This package could not  be opened. Verify the patch package exists and tha you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer patch package. I should add, I've manually deleted the OGA file, leaving the .bak version, the wizard would not do it, claiming a version conflict. And last, will restoring my PST archive restore any of the troublesome files?
