  • Hello ninevoltz,

The Windows installation is nongenuine due to it being a Volume Licensing installation that was done with an Invalid Volume Licensing product Key.  Invalid means that the product key was made by a pirating program know as a Key Generator, or KeyGen for short, and was never offically issued by Microsoft, making it Invalid.

Furthmore, the nature of Volume Licensing for Windows Operating Systems (all licenses are upgrades) precludes Volume Licenses from being used as genuine licenses for virtual machines.

In order to run Genuine Windows, you will have to purchase a Genuine full retail license or Genuine OEM license for the version and edition of Windows you want to run virtually, and you will need a separate license for each virtual machine.

  • I have the COA sticker, it does not appear to be fake. I sent a support request to Microsoft with a hi-res scan of the COA and the CD media.

I installed it in a virtual machine because this copy has never passed validation and I am trying to get an answer before I try to install it for use on the PC. I think some time ago we called Microsoft support and they said something about it being region coded for Brazil. I'll just keep on using Linux and continue supporting the Wine project if I can't get a solution for this. I don't absolutely HAVE to use Windows, thank God.

  • Well, after studying the CD and comparing it with the How To Tell site, it appears to be a fake. The hologram isn't really a hologram at all. It's definitely a good fake. Oh well.

  • Hello ninevoltz,

Did you purchase the materials thinking they were for a retail license for XP Pro or for a full retail license for XP Pro?

Is the CoA located on the boxtop of retail packaging and does not have a Product Key on it, or is the CoA the peel-off type to be affixed to the computer case and does have the Product Key on it?

Does the disc have "For distribution with a new PC only" on it in the upper left quadrant?

  • Hi ninevoltz,

Please look at your COA sticker and see if it is a genuine COA sticker, and also check if it matches - See: http://www.microsoft.com/howtotell/
