Installing CRM 2011 on Windows Server 8 Beta RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to install CRM 2011 on Windows Server 8 Beta. The installation process runs fine until it is done checking/installing the prerequisites and then suddenly stops; the two processes that were displayed under "Apps" in the Task Manager move to "Background processes", and nothing happens anymore. The last line in crm50svrsetup.log is:

    Invoking C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe -query "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MSCRM\Logs\ServerManagerQuery.xml" -logPath "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MSCRM\Logs\ServerManagerCmd.log"

This explains why nothing happens - servermanagercmd.exe was deprecated for Server 2008 R2 as explained in this 2009 TechNet document and is simply missing in Server 8; but the CRM 2011 setup relies on it.

Is there any way to get past this, or will there have to be new setup files released before CRM 2011 can be installed on Server 8?

  • I don't think CRM 2011 will install on the beta withou more hacks than I describe below, so try the RTM of Server 2012. Officially CRM 2011 is NOT supported as of this date with Windows Server 8 (now known as Windows Server 2012), but the client is; in IE10 Compatibility Mode with Update Rollup 10. I was able to get CRM 2011 installed on the latest RTM'd build of Windows Server 2012 using the following article (no help from Microsoft here, but thanks Dan):

    http://danielcai.blogspot.ca/2012/05/install-crm-2011-on-windows-server-8.html

Dan explains: "Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 installation program uses a deprecated command line tool called ServerManagerCmd.exe to install and manage Windows features during the installation" so, that .dll file and 3 other files need to be temporarily added to the Windows\System32 folder (then removed; redeploying the original ServerManager file you backed up before replacing it).

Important to note is that currently since the indexing service has been deprecated, you'll be running without it; impacting your ability to use help searches... The C++ redistributable(x64) program will need to be uninstalled and re-installed from the CRMSetupCD 'redist' folder...

All that aside, my experience after two installations of Server2012 with all ASP and .NET options checked was after a successful installation with errors, I get:

HTTP Error 404.17 - Not Found

The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler.

There are some questions in some of the forums asking for help on this, but nothing but crickets so far.

  • I definitely know it's not supported at this point.  I doubt you care about that at this point though and probably know that already.  :)

a quick Google search didn't turn up anything very useful on the first page either.

    Good luck!
