Unable to validate my Windows XP after updating to SP3. RRS feed

  • Question

  • After updating to SP 3, my PC will not do regular automatic updates; will not let me download the latest IE 8 or Windows Media Player.  I know that my Windows XP is genuine; it came preloaded on my PC when I purchased it, but I cannot get a validation code on the Microsoft website.

I downloaded the diagnostic tool, at  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062
    The report is below.

  • Firefox often doesn't work with the validation page - it barfs on the ActiveX controls.

Chrome works sometimes - it seems to depend on the exact version.

Please go to the Diagnostics page www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag and see what it has to say.

Dan is better with XP troubleshooting that I am - he's had more and deeper experience than I have.

    Try this,,,

    Open Internet Options
On the Security tab click the 'Set all zones to default' button, and click Apply.
On the Advanced tab click 'Restore Advanced Settings' and click Apply (DO NOT touch the Reset button!)
On the General tab, click Delete.... and put checkmarks in  (only)
    Preserve Favorites...
    Cookies
    History
    Download History
    Passwords
    and click Delete
wait for it to finish - now click on Settings, and ensure that the space allocated is between 40 and 250MB
    Click OK

    restart your browser.

Now try the diagnostics page again - or the validation page if the diags passed it last time.

  • As Dan says - please include all the report.

You may have to edit out the URLs/links from the Licensing Data section to get through the spam-filters on the forum, but the rest is OK.

  • I thought I had submitted the full report ... didn't realize part of it was missing.  Although my PC is quite old, other than these 2 issues, it works just find for my uses, so I'd rather correct these two problems & continue using it until it dies ... no sense in spending money, unless I have to, lol.

I am not very knowledgeable in anything computer-ese, so I hope the "fix" is easy!   I appreciate any help I can get here.  Thanks

  • The installation appears to be properly activated - what happens if you attempt validation using Internet Explorer at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate ?

What Anti-virus are you using? is it up-to-date? Have you checked for malware recently (was anything found?)

  • I've cut & paste the original message first, from when I tried to validate and do updates.  The second message is from the link you sent, above.  I have Lavasoft Ad-Aware Pro Security and the latest scans say no threats found.  I did have a couple problems back in October.  I can send you the scan results if that is useful.

    1) Validation Code Error

Code not available.  The validation code could not be obtained.  This may be due to technical difficulties, or you may be running an unsupported operating system.  Please close this window and attempt the validation process again, or use the Back button in
your Web browser to return to the download details page.  [Error code:  0x80072f07]

I have been unable to download the latest Internet Explorer, so the message I get is I have to have IE8 or later.  Since I use Firefox, I never did IE updates, so I'm not sure if this may be the glitch ?  or how to fix it!  I am a total dummy when it comes to computers!  :-/

    2)   The validation process cannot continue because your web browser is not configured to run the script required by the validation process. To extend the functionality of a Mozilla-based Web browser, you can download the required plug-in and continue with the validation
