WHS 2011 Launchpad Fails at startup RRS feed

  • Question

  • My WHS 2011 client launch pad app will not start.  Just started happening recently.  Dashboard does run, but launch pad will not.  Error Log below, fatel error about 1/4 of the way down.

Any help appreciated: Runnning Windows 8 for about a month.  Launch pad worked fine for a while after upgrade, then just stopped.  Client and server OS's are fully patched.  Client uninstalled and re-installed.

  • Does this issue occur on all clients or only on the Windows 8 client? You can try reinstalling .NET framework on the client computer first.

  • Thanks Sean,

This issue only occurs on my W8 machine, not on any win7 machines.

Also, I am unable to re-install the .NET framework.  I keep getting messages for both .NET 4 and .NET 4.5, that they are 'part of my W8 machine', I can't even run a repair, it is just blocked.

  • Hi Tefal, you can try reinstalling .NET Framework 3.5 on the Windows 8 client and see the result.

  • Maybe I am missing something, but I downloaded .Net 3.5 and attempted to install, but after getting a user account control request, nothing happens.  After some research I see that .NET 3.5 is enabled in my control panel under Turn Windows Features on or Off section (not in the uninstall or change list).  I ran a system file scan which reported no errors.

  • Hello, anyone... Still have a problem, not actually solved.  Need the thing to work please.  Anyone from MS listening?

  • Hi,  I am having the same problem. Running windows 8 Pro, the lauchpad fails at startup but dashboard works ok.

I have to manually run a backup using dashboard. Is this problem only related to windows 8 Pro ?

  • I'm also having this problem. After doing an upgrade on my main system to Windows 8, my shared folders returned an error so I couldn't access them. I tried reinstalling the launchpad and it now won't start. Launchpad is working on a new Windows 8 laptop I bought, however.

  • I am also getting this now - clean build of Windows 8 x64, was working up until last weekend. At some point over the last week has stopped working. Coming up with the following event log information for the error:

Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled Home Server connector and also uninstalled and reinstalled .NET 3.5. Other .NET apps working ok, as is Home Server Dashboard.

Has anyone found out what is causing this and how to fix it?
Is anyone in Microsoft looking at this issue?

Others seem to be having this issue (and some other threas around about it)

  • If you look at my logs, they seem to be failing like yours, on some similar XML parsing exception. Since September I have received no help from Microsoft or anyone else. WHS is dead, so I guess no help is coming.
    Friday, November 23, 2012 3:11 AM
  • I sure hope WHS2011 isn't dead. They're still well within the support period. It's not acceptable to just ditch a product you were selling like that. However, the resounding silence from Microsoft doesn't fill me with optimism. I've tried reinstalling .NET 3.5 to no effect, although I'm not in a position to go back and look at event logs on that system right now. However, given the way that Windows 8 breaks accessing shared folders without the Launchpad running, this is really an essential fix, and it's enormously frustrating that Microsoft is so silent.

  • Hi all. Just came across this post at We Got Served:

    http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/topic/22744-whs-dashboard-launch-issues/

Haven't had a chance to check it yet, but looks like it may be fix for all of us.

    Sunday, November 25, 2012 5:53 AM
  • Yes, that fixed it for me.  Launchpad now starts.  To summarize the other post:

    In your client machine:

    Go to C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft_Corporation

Make backup copies of DashboradClient.exe_StrongName_.... and Lauchpad.exe_StrongName_...

    Delete the originals.

Reboot and try the Launchpad (you will need to reset password options)

  • Yes, this also worked for me - and thanks for the clarification above.

  • Same issue today on Vista client :)  Made a folder old and copied strongname folders to it.  Reboot and all is well again.  Long Live Home Server :)

  • Tefal,

I just got this issue with Windows 10 machine today. Your fix worked for my scenario as well. Thank you for the work and post. It is appreciated.

    Thursday, July 14, 2016 4:46 PM
  • Ja, das hat es für mich behoben. Launchpad startet jetzt. Um den anderen Beitragzusammenzufassen :

    In Ihrer Client-Maschine:
