  • to increase the pool of storage or does it have to be internal? and if so does the server have to turned off to add the drive?

  • Adding an internal drive is possible via hotplugging, for removing a drive you should always power down.

    External drives can be used in the storage pool, but some implementations in the enclosure or cable quality issues sometimes lead to the situation, that such drives went missing and could not be integrated again without reformatting. So from the practice view this is not recommended (but you can integrate an external disk as backup disk to backup the home server shared folders manually in case the server gets lost completely somehow).
