  • You have a volume license copy of Windows.

    Windows Product ID Type: 1
    Windows License Type: KMS Client

KMS (Key Management Services) allows organizations to activate systems within their own network.  You need to log into the network that has your KMS server and reactivate.  Reactivation is required periodically.  You need to contact the organization that issued you the KMS key for further help.

  • It is logged into the network and it shouldn't be a KMS client because there are exactly two computers on this network, and it worked correctly for months.

  • Not your network.  The network for the organization that issued you the volume license key.  That is where the KMS server is.  If you were not issued this key by an organization then you need to change the product key back to what you recieved with the computer or a retail key for the copy of Windows you installed.

  • Thanks for the second link. The problem is that the laptop thinks it's using KMS but the desktop (which is on the same Technet contract) thinks it's a type 6 - volume MAK. The desktop is correct! I haven't changed the key and it worked for a year.

I've re-entered the key and now the laptop is happy that it doesn't require key management services, I have no idea where it got that key from. Thanks for your help.

If for some reason the machine loses its MAK Key, it will revert back to the Default Key for Volume Licences – which is the KMS Key.
You should probably rebuild the Licensing store before putting the MAK Key back in and re-activating.
