Remote Desktop Connection to WHS Server from outside home LAN RRS feed

  • Question

  • I can easily do a Remote Desktop Connection to my HP EX470 server when I'm on my home LAN. This weekend, for the first time, I tried to do it from outside, and wasn't successful. Any guidance on exactly how to specify what I'm trying to connect to?

I AM able to use remote access to reach my client PCs, server shares and server console from outside the home LAN, so I'm in pretty good shape. But I think it would be wise to have RDC in my bag of tools.

WHS is designed to use the WHS Console for all your interaction with your Server.

If you can access you website and by extention your Sever via the Console that should be enought for day to day operations.

Having said that of which I am sure you know, there are two possible way to approach this.

    1. Access one of your PC via remote access and then RDP to your Server
    2. Edit the firewall on the WHS and set up "Port Fowarding on Port 3389 to your WHS - then you should be able to RDP directly to your WHS.

I would advise against doing 2 unless you think it is really needed.

    Good Luck
