printer driver errors RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have noticed that I have quite a number of errors in Event Viewer/System all relating to required printer drivers being unknown - which I do not understand as I am not aware of any software on the WHS server that would want to print! Errors variously relate to Microsoft Shared Fax Driver, Send to Microsoft OneNote Driver and a standard HP driver.

Any suggestions how I stop this?

  • Hello,
the default setting for Remote Desktop is to redirect printers from client to the RDP session. If the drivers for these printers are not available on the server, this causes the mentioned event log entries.
If you go into the options of your RDP client (before connecting), you can uncheck Printers in the Local devices and resources area to change this behavior (I'm not sure, if this is valid also for running the WHS console from the client, which relies also on Remote Desktop technology).
So the other option would be, to login to the Windows Home Server desktop and perform following steps:
    • In Start menu click Control Panel/Administrative Tools.
    • Open Terminal Services Configuration.
    • Right click RDP-TCP and select Properties.
    • On Client Settings tab click the checkbox to disable Windows Printer Mapping amd LPT Port Mapping.
    • Click OK and confirm the message.
This will stop the propagation of client printers from server side generally.
    Best greetings from Germany
