Correct bitlocker password & RecoveryKey: can't unlock my drive 0x80070057 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have an external drive WD encrypted by bitlocker and it worked fine for ~1 year until 2 days ago. I can't access it now and I get an error: 0x80070057....

I use this external drive to store back-up of my laptop and I store there additional files.

Below is a summary of steps I checked/performed:

    1. Windows can't unlock it as it should. This is the message I get when I plug in the drive:

The BitLocker (F:) encryption on this deivice isn't compatible with your version of Windows.
    2. I tried on various machines. It didn't help. Also I tried on machines with and without TPM - without success. Ofc, I have installed all updates (windows & firmware). I also updated BIOS. It all didn't help.
    3. I looked up various similar questions on the web and this one seems to most similar: (sorry, can't post the link somehow at this stage)
    4. I tried the following:

    manage-bde -unlock F: -Password

BitLocker Drive Encryption: Configuration Tool version 10.0.19041
Copyright (C) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Enter the password to unlock this volume:
ERROR: The password failed to unlock volume F:.

At this stage I cannot write anything.... And then it fails.

    1. Recovery key isn't helpful as well
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>manage-bde -unlock F: -RecoveryPassword (recovery_key)
BitLocker Drive Encryption: Configuration Tool version 10.0.19041
Copyright (C) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

ERROR: The password failed to unlock volume F:.

    1. However, the status indicates an issue: 0x80070057...
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>manage-bde -status F:
BitLocker Drive Encryption: Configuration Tool version 10.0.19041
Copyright (C) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Volume F: [Label Unknown]
    [Data Volume]

        Size:                 Unknown GB
        BitLocker Version:    None
        Conversion Status:    Unknown
        Percentage Encrypted: Unknown%
ERROR: An error occurred (code 0x80070057):
    The parameter is incorrect.

    1. What is more in the event viewer I don;t have any critical issues:

I looked this issue up but it was already persistent earlier, so even it was present 1mth ago, it still worked...

    1. Interestingly, in the disk mgmt I can see that this drive is visible: (I canupload somewhere the photo)

Please advice, how shall I proceed?

    Best,
    kontiki_msft
