MS Money 2007 crashes during Import of OFX File from Citi Cards and Affinity FCU RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I am updating my MS Money 2007 file to bring it up to date.  The import worked for one credit union (Genisys), but crashes when I import data from CitiCards or Affinity FCU. It worked in the past for these banks. I see the message 'Import Complete'. When I click the Ok button, MS Money crashes. After that every time I open MSMoney, after log in, it shows the same message 'Import Complete' and crashes. I have tried both methods of Import from within software and by double-clicking on the file. Same results.   To get rid of the error that appears as soon as MSMoney opens, I restore from backup before logging in, uninstall MS Money, reinstall it, and then run it as Administrator. But then again as soon as I try to import, the issue happens.  It does not crash with the OFX file from Genisys Credit Union.  I checked the CitiCards OFX file with the OFX Analyzer and got the following output:

*** All line number references do not include header lines ***
    ***OFX 1.02 Add ~10
    ***OFX 2.0 Add ~2

    Verifying Security Uniqueness
    Verifying FITID Uniqueness
    Verifying Sign Correctness
    Verifying Total Calculations
    Verifying Other
    Done Analyzing File

So, I am guessing that all is ok with the OFX file.

The Citicards OFX file has 36 transactions, and the Affinity one has about 15.

I have blocked the internet for MSMoney and have moved out all except Favorite Accounts.

I have not replaced any dll or registry entry. Do I need to?

Would appreciate any help anyone can provide. I am using Windows 10.

    Thanks,

    Gopal

  • It's been awhile since Cal + I worked on the patch files, so i don't recall the differences, but why did you pick the Home + Business patch, instead of the regular Money Deluxe patch?  Also, why not upgrade to the Sunset version of Money?  We use that version everyday, without it ever crashing!

  • You MUST use a modified mnyob99.dll file from the same version of Money as your copy. No one has posted a modified copy of the Money 2007 version. You will either have to upgrade to Money Plus Sunset and use the correct dll for that version or modify the dll that Money installs for 2007 using a binary editor. Do not install Deluxe and use the dll for Business.

  • Will I need to abandon my 2007 edition and install the sunset version? is there any advantage?

Money Plus Deluxe, including Sunset, fixed a bug from Money 2007
and before:  it can write to drives with more than 2 GB of space
remaining, and the setting for the number of scheduled backups to
    retain is honored.

It also fixed a bit of a Money 2007 bug regarding entering spinoffs.

  • With any flile open, go to Tools->Settings->ProgramSettings and set the (GeneralDisplay:)StartMoneyWithThisPageOpen:AccountList

Then go to Tools->Settings->HomePageDisplaySettings and Remove the Investment Performance module.  There has been a problem where a lot of investments triggers a crash upon opening where Money opens to the "Home Page".

Then do a repair of the problem  file
File->RepairMoneyFile->QuickFileRepair.  Then try  repaired version of your file with
    File->RepairMoneyFile->StandardFileRepair level 2.

After all of this, I have good hopes that your Citicard OFX will process OK.

  • Ameridan,

    Thanks for the response.

The first article seems to help out in those situations where MSMoney has to identify the correct account. I faced that issue when the software was working for me, but it did not bother me much as I manually selected the account.  But right now I am stuck as MSMoney is not working at all. It just keeps crashing.

Anyway, as this solution involves running a Python script, and I am not yet familiar with what I need to install in my PC to run Python scripts, I did not try it out as yet.

    -----------

About the second suggestion to replace the dll,  the article has replacements for the Plus version or the Sunset version. As my version is a different one (2007 Premium edition), I first tried the summary of Raymond Chen's post you had listed.

    File offset 003FACE8: Change 85 to 8D
    File offset 003FACED: Change 50 to 51
File offset 003FACF0: Change FF to 85
    File offset 003FACF6: Change E8 to B9

But only the last offset value (E8) matched with what I am seeing for my mnyob99.dll which is having a file version of 16.0.0.621.   I guess the difference is because Raymond's version is 17 as per what is mentioned in the article.  Btw, the link to Raymond Chen's article did not work for me.  Maybe the link has changed.

So, anyway, I abandoned that, copied the mnyob99(2). dll from the Plus – Home & Business version of Sunset Money link and tried running MS Money.
But it is now asking me to run setup and install MS Money again.
So looks like this will not work? Is there a dll specific to the 2007 version ?
Will I need to abandon my 2007 edition and install the sunset version? is there any advantage?

    Thanks,

    Gopal

  • Hi Carl,

Thanks for the response. I did these steps.  It did not help.

After the level 2 repair, I renamed the repaired file with the original file name (after moving out the original file), and opened MS Money and did the import from within Money. The same issue happened again: i.e. the 'Import Complete' box shows up and then it crashes.

So I restored the file from the backup, reinstalled MS Money and ran it with the administrator option. And this time instead of importing, I double clicked on the Citi OFX file.

Nothing happened. i.e. did not get any message saying the transactions will be imported.

I right clicked, did the open with MS Money File handler, just to check again. There was no message or any difference. MSMoney remained open without crashing (crash does not happen when I reinstall and open a backed up copy).

I am wondering if there is any issue with the Money handler executable (mnyimprt.exe ?).

Any insights you can provide will be greatly helpful.

    Thanks,

    Gopal

  • How do you get the Citicards OFX file? I use PocketSense. I went to the website, and did not see how to do it from the website.

I suggest that you edit your OFX (or QIF) file with Notepad or other editor that does not add formatting characters. Locate <ACCTID> and change any digits to all 9s. Leave any X as X. The rest of the file should not be that sensitive, although you can change any merchants, but do not change any punctuation characters.

I presume the first characters in the file are

    OFXHEADER:100

Paste the modified file contents into a post, or put a copy the modified file somewhere, and post a link. We can try the file out on our own machines.

  • Sorry for the confusion.  Rename the dll file to mnyob99.dll (without the "(2)").  That may be why it's asking you to run setup, as you removed the expected dll.  MediaFire won't let me have 2 copies of the same file name, unless I zip one I guess.

  • Log into www.citicards.com
I SignOn with my userid and password for my Costco Visa Citi Credit card (or for my regular Citi preferred Mastercard).
I click on my card account "Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi-XXXX" link, which is above the current balance and last statement balance entries
In the Transactions  Spend Summary section, click on Export link
The next screen shows the options:
    Text Formats : CSV, TXT
    Financial software: QFX, QBO, OFX
I select OFX   and click on the Export button
Next screen will show the Done message, and give the option to open or save the file to the Downloads folder.

  • Ameridan, Before I opened MSMoney and got the 'run setup' message,  I renamed the old file as mnyob99.dll.old.  Also kept another copy as mnyob99(1).dll.  And then renamed the mnyob99(2).dll as mnyob99.dll.

So the issue is not due to a missing file.

Anyway, I reverted back the original dll and opened MSMoney. It opened without issues, but again failed while importing the file.  I then tried with the new dll. MSMoney opened without issues, but still failed importing the dll.  I tried it a few more times again. Sometimes it opens without issues with the new dll, but most times it gives me the setup message.

I will try a few more combinations and see if I can get it to work.

In some websites, I noticed that some people had success by changing the IE Version# in the registry.

I tried that as well, but it did not work for me.

  • I pasted that into a *.ofx file. Opened a copy of my file, for experimenting.

Opened the *.ofx file, and Money asked what account. I imported I think it was 36 transactions successfully.

    I was wondering how

    <ACCTTYPE>CREDITLINE

would work out. My Citicard files are different, but yours came in.

I am going to edit your file a tad.

EDIT: I tried your download method. I found I had not seen the OFX choice because I had to scroll to do it. I followed your method description, and got the file, just as you did. It had the <ACCTTYPE>CREDITLINE thing too. Downloaded into Money fine too.

So I don't know why your file is not processing for you. I am running Money Plus Deluxe Sunset with the patch. Money 2007 should work for that.

If you want to try PocketSense with Citibank, it should work nicely too. More work to set up, but the process is more automated. You can try the regular PocketSense documentation, and let me know if something doesn't work so well. The initial setup is more work than using the web.

I use the Windows Scheduler to trigger PocketSence to download my CC and broker stuff daily in the early morning hours. Some tricks needed for that.

Thanks for that info. I will try PocketSense (had not heard of it in the past) sometime soon, after my immediate issues are resolved.

I am not sure why Citibank is having Account Type as Credit Line. It is just a regular credit card.

Btw, I made some strange progress. I am hoping these symptoms will tell you more about what might be wrong.

As I was not making much progress with the patch dll, I abandoned that effort and just started using the one that originally came with  the 2007 edition.

The 36 transactions were for period 6/17/2020 to 7/13/2020.

I tried exporting only for the 1st 2 days where there were transactions : 6/17 and 6/20. That failed. i.e. MSMoney crashed after the Import Complete message.

Then I tried only for 6/17.    All the 6 transactions of that day came through without MSMoney crashing.

Then I tried only for 6/20, which is having a single credit entry.  That failed.

Next I tried for only 6/23 which had 2 transactions. That failed.

Then I tried for only one of the two 6/23 entries, by doing a transaction search in Citi website to ensure it returned only one .... the one for $29.59. It was successfully loaded and visible in MSMoney.

Next I tried for the other 6/23entry ... the one for $13.07. That seemed to be successful i.e. I got the 'Import Complete' message and MSMoney did not crash.  But I am unable to see the transaction in MSMoney. I searched in the Reports : 'Transactions by Payee'.  And still did not find it. I closed MSMoney. Reopened it. Same result.  I imported the OFX with that single transaction again, and repeated all I have mentioned here. Still unable to find.

I did the quick repair and the standard repair. Log said "No broken records in the original file".   I replaced the original file with the repaired file. Opened and Checked. That transaction was still not there.

So I tried to create it manually. After pasting the merchant name in the Pay To field, I noticed that the vendor's name was missing in the Pay To list, even though I had entered a couple of transactions in MSMoney in the past for that vendor. Upon tabbing out to categorize as Dining Out, MSMoney crashed!.

I opened MSMoney again, and repeated the action. This time there were no crashes. The transaction was recorded successfully.

I manually entered the transaction for the credit entry of 6/20 that had failed earlier. That succeeded without any incident.

So, not sure what to make of the above experience :

There certainly seems to be an issue with multiple dates, and sometimes with multiple transactions on a single date. And sometimes the transactions are not showing up even if the file load is successful.

On a hunch, I checked the date format in settings in control panel. All looks ok.

There is enough hard disk space too.

So, I am hoping there is a simple reason for this strange behavior, and that it can be easily fixed.

Anyway,  I will check the pocket sense solution soon, like in a week or two.

Kindly let me know if the symptoms I have described above, tells you anything that might be useful for fixing this issue.

    Thanks.

  • Cal/Ameridan,

I am convinced now that this issue of MS Money crashing is occurring whenever there is a Payee who is not listed in the MS Money file.

I used Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard for quite a long time for MSMoney, and then had recently started using Windows Server 2019 Standard after my Windows 2008 Server PC became unusable with extremely slow performance. I got stuck with these kind of MSMoney crashed in my 2019 Server m/c, and then recently moved to Windows 10 PC.  The issue is happening here too.

So this issue was not happening in Windows 2008 R2, and started only after I moved to Windows Server 2019 Standard and continued into Windows 10. I am seeing the truth of all this only now.

    (1) Is there a way to resolve the Payee issue ?

    (2) I will also be on the lookout for the multiple date range issue. I am not yet sure if this happens only when new Payees are encountered in the date range, or if that is a separate issue where MSMoney crashes in my Win 10 PC when I import transactions over multiple dates. Any insights into this particular observation?

    Thanks,

  • Cal, Ameridan, Bob,

Thanks for your suggestions. I installed the Money Plus Sunset Deluxe version and replaced the dll with the appropriate one. I was able to download all transactions from Citi, Affinity FCU and Genisys FCU without any issues.  My sincere thanks to all of you for sharing your expertise and recommendations.

    Regards,

    Gopal
