MCITP: SA Exams not being Retired RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I've now viewed several threads here where people are saying that the MCITP: Server Administrator exams (70-640, 70-642, 70-646) are being retired on July 31, 2013. This is a misunderstanding.

The MCITP certifications (EA & SA) are being retired on that date, along with some of the core exams for the MCITP: Enterprise Administrator certification (70-643, 70-647). However, the MCITP: SA exams (70-640, 70-642, 70-646) are not being retired, only the MCITP: SA designation.

Students who pass the MCITP: SA exams after July 31, 2013 will now be awarded the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification instead of the MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 certification. It is simply a name change for the MCITP: SA.

Microsoft's MCITP Certifications web page says the following:

MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008. This certification will no longer be available to earn as of July 31, 2013. Candidates who pass Exams 70-640, 70-642, and 70-646 will continue to earn the MCSA: Windows Server 2008 certification after the MCITP: Server Administrator on Windows Server 2008 certification is no longer available.

  • Thanks for the info, this takes a little of the panic away.

Do you think there is going to be an issue with having a MSCA:2008 vs a MCITP:2008, or any confusion outside of Microsoft?

  • You're welcome, M. Severe. Glad I could help.

Yes. I believe there will be some confusion initially regarding MCSA: Windows Server 2008 vs. MCITP: Server Administrator. Many employers may probably not realize that they are identical certifications.

However, as far as the return to the MCSA and MCSE designations is concerned, this is probably a good thing since these were the original designations that people were familiar with for some time, although they now stand for something different.

And as time passes, and Microsoft's marketing machine does its job, employers will become more comfortable with the new certifications, just as they adjusted to the MCITP after the last change.

  • Hi James,

    Thanks for clarification.

I'm current holder of MCSE 2003 (very old i know).

    Just passed 70-649.

If I passed 70-646, will this gives me MCSA 2008 (equivalent to MCITP 2008 Server Admin).

    Thanks Alot.

    Cheers Le
