  • There is no need to register your HP preinstalled OEM version of Windows Vista with Microsoft.  Your computer manufacturer, HP, is responsible for technical support.

If your HP computer came preinstalled with Windows Vista, then you need to register with HP:

  • Hello,

If you are having difficulties Registering Windows Vista, please go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/registration/default.mspx and attempt to register. If you are still unable to complete the Registration, click the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of that page.

Please Note: Registering Windows is strictly voluntary. Registering (or Not Registering) will have no affect on your ability to download and/or install Updates (including SP1) or any other functionality within Windows.

If by the word Register, you, in fact, mean Activate (i.e. if you are unable to Activate Vista), please create a New forum thread, provide a Diagnostic Report as well as a complete decription of the issue.

    Thank you,

  • I have the same problem, I have a hp Pavilion dv9260nr laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and when I click on "register vista online" it opens a web page and has an arrow that says "click to continue with registration" but clicking on the arrow does nothing.  Why won't it let me register it?  I bought the laptop from MicroCenter about a week ago.

I also don't see windows vista service pack 1, even though my wife, on an IDENTICAL COMPUTER, was able to download SP1 for vista using her update center.

My computer came with an uninstalled OEM version of Windows Vista Ultimate 64, though I have exactly the same problem. I can't register online and my manufacturer couldn't have done this for me, as it wasn't yet installed.

What can I do in this case?
