  • Hello Hello healingdread,

That is a problem. The token.dat file is basically Window's Licensing Store.  Without it, Windows will not show as Licensed.  In addition, Windows should recreate the file if it is found to be missing (As far as Windows is concerned, renaming a file is basically the same as deleting it...which is what we are trying to do, to force Windows to recreate the file which will force windows to repopulate the file with the proper Licensing data.)

Would you try again, but once you get to step #5 (cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform) type: dir
That will give you a list of all the files located in that directory (i.e. in that folder).  You should see something like this:

    02/10/2010  02:06 PM    <DIR>          .
    02/10/2010  02:06 PM    <DIR>          ..
    07/13/2009  08:34 PM    <DIR>          Cache
    12/10/2009  07:50 AM         5,021,446 tokens.bar
    02/10/2010  02:06 PM         3,311,306 tokens.dat
                   2 File(s)      8,332,752 bytes
                   3 Dir(s)  68,866,600,960 bytes free

(Note: if you haven't run the rename tokens.dat tokens.bar command yet, you should not see the "tokens.bar" files listed, yet).

    a) If you do see the "tokens.dat" in that folder, then it may be that you mis-typed something while following my steps, the first time.  In this case, continue on with the steps  (#6 thru #10) and see if it resolves the issue.

    b) If you Do Not see the "tokens.dat" in that folder, then there is something wrong with Windows (possibly some sort of damage or maybe some sort of program, similare to the G-Data program or possibly Malware, that may be causing the problem) that is preventing Windows from recreating the file.  Unfortunatly, this situation would be outside my knowledge to troubleshoot and the only suggestions I could give is to either create a (no cost) support request at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/contactwga or reinstall Windows.

    Thank you,

  • Hello healingdread,

Do you by chance have any programs made by the company G-Data installed.  Such as Anti-Virus or Internet Security?

If you do, please see post matked as Answered in at the following URL http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/8e047dc1-ddfc-47a6-a40a-e60a84817d92

If you do not, please try the below steps:

    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection servive may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hi healingdread,

While I'm not happy that I couldn't get the issue resolved without having you reinstall, I am glad that your computer should be back up and running once you have finished the reinstall.  Hopefully I won't see you back in this forum again :-)

The Key you are using is one that was leaked to the internet very early on in the Win 7 release process - It's for an Acer machine, and your machine appears to be a Lenovo.
You have an apparently genuine Office installation.

What does the COA sticker on the back of your PC say the original install was? Did you get a free Upgrade with it?
Use the Key from that to make your system genuine, assuming it's Win 7Ultimate - otherwise, you'll have to either buy a legal copy of Win 7, or revert to the original system after backing up your data to external media.

Please read the Stickies at the top of the forum index page - then repost in your OWN, NEW thread, with a copy of your MGADiag report.
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

  • I had that annoying little message in the bottom right corner of my screen so I googled it. I clicked on the 2nd option I think, and scrolled down until I reached your response. I followed the directions, and voila....Windows authenticated & message gone. Unless of course this is all some elaborate hoax to get people to do exactly what you need them to do in order to finish activating the malware you already installed on their machine.....

  • Please do not resurrect year old threads.

As Noel has explained, if you have a Validation or Activation related issue, please create your own thread for your own particular issue.
