  • Question

  • Purchased the computer from Dell with Office loaded on computer, it is now indicating invalid. Review the below and let me know, as this seems unusual as I purchased this laptop individually.

  • Hello wally123,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

Note that the report says you have an invalid VLK, which means that (a) your Dell Inspiron computer has a Volume Licensing edition of Office Enterprise 2007 installed, and that (b) an invalid Volume Licensing Key (VLK) was used to install it.  An "invalid" VLK is one that was not issued by Microsoft, rather software pirates use a program that reverse engineers the Product Key algorithm and then uses it to generate new "keygen" Product Keys that will install the product but will not pass the latest verion of Office Validation, since they are not Microsoft-generated Product Keys.

Dell only installs OEM licenses on compters it sells to consumers and small businesses, so it's very unlikely that this exact installation of Office was on your Dell when it shipped from Dell to you.  Quite often major manufacturers such as Dell will install a Trial installation of Office on their computers, but there is no Trial edition of Office Enterprise 2007, so again it's very unlikely that this installation of Office came from Dell.

As an individual consumer you should never have been sold Volume Licensing materials for Office Enterprise such as a VL CD, and you certainly should not have received an invalid Product Key.

Your first course of action is to confront the seller of the installed software with this information and demand either a full refund or to receive the genuine software you paid for.  If the seller refuses to help, please consider exercising whatever recourse is available to you from consumer protections in place by law, or thru your method of payment, or thru the selling venue.

Also, you may be able to participate in the Office Genuine Offer to purchase a discounted replacement copy of office, and depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  To participate in the Office Genuine Offer, please click on the Learn More Online link being displayed on your screen by the OGA Notifications utility.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.
