Product Key issue (Non Trial Version)

  I have a laptop I purchased about a year and half ago that came loaded with Windows 8.  I upgraded to 8.1 and to Windows 10. 

  The laptop crashed, I had to reload Windows 7 as I didn't have the Windows 8 disc the laptop came with.  I attempted to use the Windows upgrade tool to get back to 8 or 8.1 and now it's says the Product Key is not valid.  Is it not valid because it was used to upgrade previously??  Even more strange, it doesn't accept the Windows 7 Ultimate Product Key either and the software was a Microsoft Company Store Purchase.
