Rewriting CRM 4.0 plugins using CRM 2011 SDK? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am importing CRM 4.0 organization to a new server where CRM 2011 is installed. Though, all CRM 4.0 plugins run as is in CRM 2011, do we need to rewrite CRM 4.0 plugins using CRM 2011 SDK for future sake or for any reason?

    Suggestions are highly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Abhi

  • As long as you're using supported mechanisms, the vast majority of CRM 4.0 plugins should continue to work just as they always had in CRM 2011.  Looking back at the CRM 3.0 -> 4.0 migration, there are still CRM 3.0 callouts being used on CRM 4.0 installations with the latest Rollups applied.

That said, I have no doubt that a plugin re-written using the CRM2011 SDK will perform better than its CRM 4.0 equivalent and it will of course, avail you of any new functionality exposed by the CRM 2011 interface.

I've usually got too much client work on the go to spend much time tinkering with our own CRM installation, so I'll likely be leaving our CRM 4.0 plugins alone until they require upgrading/updating (we completed our 2011 migration yesterday).

  • Hi Abhi,

CRM 4.0 plugins works in CRM 2011 but it will not take advantage of the new features in CRM 2011.

  • Just one question - do we need to install any rollups in order to run CRM 4.0 plugins in CRM 2011 environment?

    Thanks,

    Abhi

  • No.  No rollups have been released for CRM 2011.  As long as they use supported mechanisms, CRM 4.0 plugins installed in the database, will be upgraded and continue to work in CRM 2011 as part of the CRM Organisation upgrade process.
