Using valid XP product key. What's going wrong? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Could someone interpret these diagnostics and get back to me as to why my copy of XP suddenly deactivated and doesn't want to reactivate? I even used the code printed on a sticker on the side of tower. Please and thank you, everyone!

The Key you are using above is a widely-published one on the internet – as such it will have been blocked from activation by Microsoft.

IF the Key on your COA sticker on the machine’s case is for Win XP Pro, then use the Product Key Update Tool to change the Key to that one. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/help/genuine/product-key – you may have to activate by phone.

  • Thank you for the tip, but that didn't seem to work either. I used the code on the sticker with the update tool and it said that it didn't match the system. I see that it says pro, which it shouldn't be, so is there a way to get a clean install of Home (what it should be) and use the sticker code?

  • You'll need to contact Dell and Request Dell Backup Discs for Windows XP Home Premium edition and perform a "clean install".

Your COA sticker almost certainly says that it’s for XP Home?
If that’s the case – did you take the machine in for repair?
If so, complain to the repairman, as he installed a counterfeit copy of XP Pro rather than a licensed copy of XP Home.

You need to do a reformat/reinstall using proper XP media.
As Carey says, you should be able to acquire those from Dell for a relatively small price.
