Windows XP Pro manual upgrade from SP2 to SP3 need activation code???

Question
-
Recently upgraded from SP2 to SP3 using manual download. Towards the end of the installation, I was asked to key in an activation code to validate Windows.
Why do we need an activation code to upgrade to SP3? Where do I get the code? The person who gave me the SP3 download clarifies theres no need to activate. Tried calling in to activate but Windows support said the installation ID number is invalid. I now have only 30 days to use my pc. I do not wish to upgrade to 7 at the moment. How do I activate my Windows?
