Windows 7 Not Genuine Message RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Dell laptop which came from factory with Windows Vista.  I upgraded to Windows 7 from an Upgrade 3 pack from Newe**.com.  The upgrade was performed at the same time as a hard drive replacement(back in March).  I ran into trouble with the activation at that time and contacted Microsoft.  They assisted me over the phone and everything was fine...  Until yesterday.  After doing updates, I received a message that my software is not Genuine.  I contacted MS support and they forwarded me to customer service which is not open at this time.  Below is the diag report.  I appreciate any help you guys could provide.  Thanks in advance.  -Pi

  • Ypou have a couple of critical file mismatches -

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\sppcext.dll[Hr = 0x80070002]
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\sppcommdlg.dll[Hr = 0x80070002]

They indicate that the files in question are missing.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

     and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     At the Command prompt, type

     SFC /SCANNOW

     and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

  • Noel,

I appreciate your quick response, especially on a Sunday.  I had to duck out to pressure wash a fence.  Here are the results you asked for and a link to the Zipped CBS.log.

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of t
    em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

    cbs.zip copied to https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=63BB582FAFEF4E26&id=63BB582FAFEF4E26%21114

    Rerun of MGADiag

  • There is a large amount of corruption evident in the CBS log - both in the files, and the backups in the winsxs folder.

I rather think that your best option is going to be a repair install - there's certainly more to repair that isn't in the CBS log.

Please see the following article for advice on how best to do it.
