  • Question

  • I recently purchased a computer from a company that had been using a VLK for Windows XP. I had been using this computer for about 2 months prior to purchasing it and had built up a decent amount of data on it that i did not want to lose. Upon purchasing the PC, the company informed me that I needed to put my own copy of XP on it, so i went out and purchased a copy of XP and, after reading around on the internet, decided that a repair install would be my best bet.

The install went well, I still have all of my settings and files on my new version of XP Pro, but I can not update. I get the error message 0x80004005.

The MGA Diagnostic tool returns this report:

  • Darin,

Unfortunately this machine has not been able to receive SP2, and therefore is stuck on IE 6, which does not support the manage add-ons.  Those steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798  got my computer to change it's status to:

after using the MGADiag utility, but it did not solve the problem of being unable to update.

I still get the same error message.  Further, I manually downloaded Service Pack 2 from the downloads page, and it crashes with the following error upon "inspecting your current configuration"

    "An internal error occurred,"

I will be following your advice and opening a
    WGA support request.

    Thanks,

  • Jonathan Martin,

All of your Office 2003 products (Office, Visio and Front Page) are nongenuine installations of blocked Volume Licensing Keys.  As you noted, in order to get genuine you will have to purchase valid copies and install them.

However, DO NOT purchase Office where you got the current installation of XP Pro, which your description said you used to do a reinstallation, because you purchased a Volume Licensing edition of XP Pro; given the circumstances, this newly purchased and installed XP Pro is probably a Blocked VLKey right now or will become a Blocked VLK in the future.

Did you happen to run the mgadiag utility on this computer prior to your purchase of it from the company?  Did the result come up as Genuine Windows and Office, or was it nongenuine Office and Genuine Windows, or what?  The reason I ask is that if the company is running a lot of nongenuine software, the folks at http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/Reporting.mspx would want to know about it.

In order to try to correct the Cryptographic Errors that are showing on the report, please follow these steps:

    --Cryptographic--

For any cryptographic issues (not including the rare cryptographic errors resulting from DirectX 9.0c install)

    1) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/
    2) Click "Start Diagnostics"
3a) If it passes, then you are not having a "normal" cryptographic issue. Please post on the forums with a detailed description of the symptoms.
3b) If you see "Failed Validation Self-help: Cryptography check" and text below will state: "Your computer is not properly configured to run the Microsoft validation process. Click Resolve Now to continue"
    4) Click the "Resolve Now" button.
    5) DO NOT BE ALARMED! Your browser will appear freeze, but it is just fixing the issue. Wait a minute or so.
6a) If the fix was successful: you will see all the items listed with "Passed" in green and text at below that states: "Your computer is properly configured to run the Microsoft validation process. Click either Validate Windows or Validate Office to use the Microsoft validation process.
6b) If the fix was not successful: You will see the text: "The following error(s) occurred while trying to repair your computer configuration. To learn how to resolve each configuration error, click More Information"
7b) If you are not able to resolve the errors on your own, click the "Submit a technical support request" link.

    8) Regardless if your issue was resolved (by the tool) or not, please post your results/feedback in the forums so we may better refine the tool to your needs.

  • Thanks for the reply.  When I get home tonight I will try the fix you suggested.  As far as running the tool goes, I only ran it after I could not get anything to work, so as far as the vlk being legit before I purchased it, i feel that it is, due to the key being on an OEM tag (sticker) originally fixed to the box.

I ran out on my lunch and picked a copy of office up from Best Buy, so I should not have a problem with that.

    Thanks again!

  • Jonathan Martin,

What you are calling the OEM Tag is likely the Certificate of Authenticity.  Please examine the COA and tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

    Wednesday, March 14, 2007 4:37 PM
  • First off, the tag was removed when I too possession of the computer (they fdid not want me to use the key that was on it) so I do not have this information any longer.

As for the fix you suggested, after following your suggestions, i followed your steps, and got an error code of 0x80096010 and then followed those instructions , and tried to update windows again, which Failed.  I then did a restart of my machine, tried to update one more time, and failed again.

Here is my newest report from MGADiag.  I am trying to resolve this problem before I cause any more by re-installing Office.

  • Jonathan Martin,

Please rerun the mgadiag utility.  Upon completion of the run, click the Windows tab if it is not already active, then click the "Resolve" button in the lower left.  The utility will run a script that may be able to fix the Cryptographic errors.  No matter what the tool reports when it's done, at that point restart the computer.  When restarted, go back to www.microsoft.com/genuine and attempt another validation.  If successful, try your updates.  If not, please post back with results.

It's too bad the company made the error of removing the COA.  Do they still have it (and the genuine MS XP CDROM that came with the computer if the COA shows the words "OEM Software")?  The COA represents the original license for the Windows that came preinstalled on the computer, which should have been included and transfered to you with the purchase.  The COA has nothing to do with their Volume License, other than showing that the computer had an original license that the VL upgraded.

  • Hi Jonathan,

Just to confirm, you did go to http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/ and clicked the “Start Diagnostic". It then displayed "Failed Validation Self-help: Cryptography check" and you clicked the "Resolve Now" button.  What did the page display next? (please be descriptive).

Those are the steps I followed, and this is the message that I received:

    "

When i clicked on the link, I got taken to article 813442, and I followed the steps there (re-registering the listed dll's.)

  • Dan,

I get a message "Problems have occurred while attempting to fix the cryptographic errors.  Please contact Microsoft Support."  and upon restart I get the same errors I have been getting.

  • Jonathan Martin,

I think your situation is a little more complex than can be adequately addressed in the forum.

May I suggest opening up a free online WGA support request at this link?  http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860

  • Hi Jonathan,

Can you try the following fix to see if this helps to resolve your issue?

Open internet explorer, click "tools" then "manage add-ons" then find the Windows Genuine Advantage ActiveX control and put it as "ENABLE". If the setting is only allowed to be changed by administrators, then you must go to your C:\windows\system32 and DELETE the LegitCheckControl.dll file. Then go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/Validate.aspx?displaylang=en and revalidate. That will reload the DLL file correctly. Reboot your computer after this.

If for some reason the ActiveX control isn't there then skip to the next part and delete the file, and go from there.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, I suggest trying the steps in the 'You cannot install some updates or programs' article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

If you have any problems following the steps in the article or they do not resolve the problem, then I suggest following Dan's advice and  opening up a free online WGA support request at this link?  http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860

    Thanks,
    Jonathan
