New install - older PC RRS feed

  • Question

  • Because I unwittingly purchased "For distribution only with a new PC" s/w from a foreign website, I have been again palgued by the Counterfeit software messages. It did seem odd that the messages did not occur initially and in fact the initial round of Windows Updates worked fine.

Now my question. I am considering the purchase of a (hopefully) genuine Win XP full install WITHOUT SP2. I am hoping to install the new s/w and then upgrade it to SP2 without connecting to the internet. I have a copy of the SP2 upgrade stored on my hard disk. Should this approach work OK?

  • Yes, your approach will work.  However, genuine versions of Windows XP now for sale on the retail market have included SP2 for the last couple of years.
