Shared Folders View History Failing

Question
-
Attempts to View History of Shared Folders now return the error message "... not enough data... minimum of one week's data required...". It used to work but no longer, even when no changes have been made to the Shares for several weeks.
Something got corrupted I guess. Can anyone point me towards a solution please.

Hi Olaf,
Progress! Yes I now have a list of size_log...qsm files in the 'new' qsm_data folder, all date/timed at 00.00 13 Feb. Clearly I have to wait until a week's worth of log entries has accumumated but I am confident that you have steered me to the solultion.
Many thanks for your help.

Hi Keith,
with "History" you mean the Previous versions, I assume? Although this is a legacy of the basis OS, Windows Server 2003, this feature is not supported in Windows Home Server.
This FAQ explains the backgrounds.

Did you recently do a Server Reinstallation, or install an add-in or app?Wednesday, February 11, 2009 2:42 AMModerator -

No. CageyWoolf is referring to the History of each share shown in the Console (right click on a share, then click View History).Wednesday, February 11, 2009 2:43 AMModerator -
Hi Kariya,
Server re-installation several weeks ago. I have been struggling with a 'buggy' add-in (in and out several times recently) and the Patch Tuesday up-dates were installed yesterday. I would have expected a re-installion to reset the history but not an 'unrelated' add-in. The add-in that is causing me head scratching is the Tranquil AVA (My Music) which does not recognise my CD/DVD drive by the way. Am I just being impatient and not realising that Install/Uninstall of this add-in resets the View History?
Also I did explain my question well; it is right-click View History on any Shared Folder that produces the 'History Not Available' message. Sorry!
Cheers

I have to say sorry, I simply assumed a translation issue (and had also totally eliminated, that this history in the console exists).
The data for the history of shared folder is stored in C:\Programme\Windows Home Server\qsm_data on the server.
So maybe deleting the .qsm files (or moving them to another folder), rebooting the server and waiting at least a week fixes the behavior (a method, which is unsupported and not yet tested, so it would be done at own risk). The files have all a time stamp of 0:00, so don't expect an immidiate reappearance.
Or the permissions to that folder are misadjusted. Do the files you see there have the current date (or at least the number of files which correspondents with the number of currently shared folders)?

Hi Olaf,
I even left the 'not' out... should be "I did NOT explain..."
qsm_data sounds very hopeful... but I can't find it!. I have only "de" and "en" folders under C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server. Properties do not show as 'Hidden' but may be it is. How to fix this please. Sorry if it is a 'dumbo' question.
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
it is not clear, if you logged in via Remote Desktop or locally on the server using the account Administrator and the console password?
Only here you should find that folder, not on the client PC. If it is not on the server, maybe it helps to recreate it. (The folder is not hidden and not marked as system, so it should be visible with default settings in Windows Explorer.)
I moved my files off from that folder (and got instantly no history any more). Now waiting, if the files are being rebuilt automatically.

Hi Keith,
I can confirm now, that the files have been recreated at midnight on my server for each of the shares.
So this folder on the servers c: drive seems to be the key for the history as assumed.

Hi Olaf,
I was using an RDC; now connected direct to the server vga monitor and PS2 keyboard and mouse.
On C:\Program Files\Windows Homer Server I now have three sub-folders, de, en, and qsm_data. The last I have just added and it is currently empty. The file qsm.exe is present in the 'parent' folder and Task Manager shows it running, using 7,412 K but zero CPU usage.
If I follow you correctly I should hope that at midnight the qsm.exe will spring into life and recreate the files that got deleted somehow. I shall have another look tomorrow and see if all is now progressing. Many thanks for your further help.
