Intall Itunes 9 on my WHS - Done but with questions. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Installed Itunes 9 on my WHS (via RDP console session) and  moved my iTunes folders to the WHS instead of having it always on my work desktop. Connected it to my apple TV and made it a Share for the rest of the family.

The only way I can make it ‘always on’ on the WHS is to log on with a RDP session start it up then close the RDP session without logging off ? Is there another way ?

I also get a File Conflict warning from the WHS console app – saying Itunes Libary .itl is open ?

  • Installing iTunes or other desktop software on your server isn't supported. In the case of iTunes, which includes the ability to stream to your Apple TV appliance, you will need to have it running in a desktop session, I'm afraid. iTunes streaming only works if iTunes is running, and iTunes isn't designed to run as a service.

As for the file conflict warning, if a file is held open for more than 24 hours, Drive Extender generates a warning because it's unable to duplicate the open file. iTunes keeps it's library file open as long as iTunes is running, thus your error.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • One way to get it done is by enabling autologon (search for "How to enable automatic logon in Windows") and run iTunes at startup. Not nice since your acct credentials are in clear text but if you give very low privileges to the account you're logging in with it should be OK.
That's how I have it running...
