After restoring WHS image backup, I can't access the console

Help!
So I've been using Acronis Trueimage to make image backups of the system drive and now I've needed to restore the image.
You would think if I restored the entire drive's two partitions (SYS and DATA) that everything would work? No.
WHS gives me a "Backup service is not running" error when I try to launch the console. It also shows the DATA drive as missing.
Is there a way out of this? I used acronis becuase I find it crazy that there is no way to image backup WHS. If a drive dies I don't want to have to re-install WHS from scratch then go through the hassles of putting all the PCs drives etc and then all the software back on.
Is there some trick that can make WHS repair its DATA drive?
thanks!Tuesday, March 31, 2009 8:16 PM

Hi,
cloning the Windows Home Server system volume is not supported. Windows Home Server involves the volume ID in its drive assignments, and this is not restored properly by imaging software to another disk (?). (Some experiences said, if you clone the full drive with all its properties, it may work, even if WHS shows the new Seagate drive as the old Samsung then.)
Your best chance now is to try a Server reinstall. (If this is not offered, check this FAQ for another solution.)
This is a special installation mode, which wipes drive C:, but takes over all the data.
After finishing setup pull the updates for WHS via Console until you get none.
Redo the lost configurations (user accounts, remote access settings, Add Ins).
Finally run discovery.exe from C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server on each of the clients to reestablish the connection.
Best greetings from Germany

Olaf,
That's not how it works at all. Steps 1, 2, and 7 are completely unnecessary. You do a Server Reinstallation. Once it's done you re-create your users and re-install your add-ins (and drivers, if necessary). That's it.
Thank you very much for your reply....
However, I really must ask this one question..... WHY????????? Who at Microsoft thought that no one would ever want to do an image backup for an easy, simple restore in case of disaster instead of 1) make non-image backup 2) re-format hard drive from scratch 3) Re-install WHS from sctrach 4) Re-add all the drivers for your system 5) Re-add all the users 6) re-add all the software add-ins and other software 7) copy files from non-image backup
Is it me or would the first method me a lot easier?
For most people, no. For starters, most people don't even know what Ghost/TrueImage is (much less have those apps at their disposal). Keep in mind the target of the product: users who have little experience with computers (and really have no desire to learn).
I'm just ticked off that I've now wasted $100 on WHS. Not being able to have an image backup is my deal-breaker.
Again, thank you for your reply and best regards,- Marked as answer by Lara JonesModerator Friday, April 10, 2009 5:43 PM
