Can workflows be used to use mail merge templates for automatically generating letters in CRM 2011?

  We use letter templates on a regular basis.  The current program pulls in dynamic values for certain fields and the user is able to either print or e-mail the letter.  I'm looking for a way to use mail merge functionality in CRM 2011, using mail merge templates and have a workflow automate the process.  Has anyone done something similar?
