WHS Change size of C partition RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have 3 drives in my whs, a 250gb system drive + a 250gb and 1tb
I needed more space on the C: partition so I used a paragon partition manager to re size the partition to 40GB instead of 20GB, taking the space from the other partition which only has about 40gb on it.
However after the change was made and the os booted, I logged in (via rdp), an error popped up saying the backup service has encountered a problem. If I open up the whs manager and go to system drives it says the system drive is not added. As there was data on the data potion of that drive it seems to have failed. I can still access the shared folders, but doesn't know if any is missing and what was on the other drive. I cannot click add to re-add the system drive as the disk manager plug in crashes after loading the page.

How can I get WHS to re-recognise the data partition on the drive?

  • You can not change the size of the WHS system partition.

The only safe way out is to do a server re-installation. You will be presented with this option when running the WHS setup from the original distribution media. This will re-install WHS and (under normal conditions) preseve all data in the shared folders.

Considering you did some heaby "tinkering" with the system that could interfere with a succesfull server re-installation, I would advise you to backup important data on the drives first. You can access your files through the \DE\shares directories in the root of your system disk and both data disks. To copy of any data off you can connect these drives to an alternate PC.

(For the server re-instalation to be succesfull, make sure to reconnect the drives using the original IDE/SATA port)

  • I don't have nearly enough space to cover a backup of the servers data. If I keep the disks as they are and run the re- install will it keep all backups and data; much like on xp running repair windows to just reinstall the os?

  • There is no guarantee you will be able to use the server recovery option successfully, having resized your partitions. You can certainly try, since at worst you don't get that option when asked what kind of installation you want at the beginning of setup. But assuming you don't have the option, the best course to move forward is probably this:
    • Buy one additional drive, the same size as (or larger than) the largest drive in your current server.
    • Do a new install on just that drive. (I.e. remove all other drives from your server.)
    • Complete the server Out Of Box Experience, either by running the setup at the end directly on the server or by installing from the Connector installation CD on a computer you want as a client.
    • Connect one of your server's old drives (I would start with the 1 TB drive) to a computer on your network. Copy everything you find in <driveletter>:\DE\Shares\etc. to your server's shares.
    • Add that drive to your server's storage pool. The drive will be formatted when you do this, so anything left on it will be lost at that point. Note: for your old system drive, you should use partition management software (such as diskpart) to completely clean the drive off before attaching it to your server. Never attach an old Windows Home Server system drive to another installation of Windows Home Server.
    • Proceed to the next drive, and do the same thing.
The easiest thing to do with backups it to abandon the current backup database. (Given that you're seeing errors related to backup on your server now, you might not have a choice.) If you decide you'd like to try to keep your current database, you'll need to follow the instructions in this technical brief describing how to copy the backup database form one computer to another. You'll need to modify the procedure set out there by copying from each of your drives individually (with the backup services shut down). The location you'll copy from is <driveletter>:\DE\Folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}. Given you're seeing errors about backup now, I can't guarantee you'll be able to recover your database this way, I'm afraid.
Once you've got all your old drives added to your server, you should be able to turn duplication back on for shares that need it.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
