Backup stops at "A backup is starting" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have 4 PCs backing up to my MediaSmart server. 3 of them backup without any problems. The 4th one often gets stuck at "A backup is starting". If it ever gets past this message it always completes the backup.

In the last 3 weeks it has not managed to backup even once. On previous occasions if I found this error it would normally work after I rebooted the PC. But over these 3 weeks even after I reboot it will not complete the backup. It looks like it has a permanent problem.

I've tried rebooting the PC, rebooting the Server, removing and re-installing the client software, manual back-ups and automatic backups, wireless and wired, anti-virus enabled and anti-virus disabled. I ran chkdsk as suggested in another forum, but that didn't find any problems and the backup still fails.  The backup always fails at the same point.

I can connect fine using Windows Home Server Console on the same PC...

Any ideas what could be causing the backup to get stuck at this point?

I've had some discussions on a couple of other forums at:

    http://www.mediasmarthome.com/forum/thr ... ting/#5867
    http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4374&p=37909#p37909

On those threads I got to the point where I was posting results from the Event Logs (I installed the WHS Toolkit on the problem client and on the server), but I could not find the root problem.  They suggested I try asking in this forum. I'll paste the results from my Event Logs below - I can provide more details (expanded info) on any of these if it would be helpful. These logs are from one instance where the backup failed - all the others look the same. The server shows the backup starting but then no further messages about the backup. The client shows the backup starting and then a few seconds later a bunch of MSDTC errors (in both the Applications and System event lists) - then the backup just hangs.

Can someone decipher what could be happening here? I am running out of ideas of where to look to solve this...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

    Mike
