  • As of last year (Sept. 2005), a genuine OEM version of Microsoft software need not be sold with any hardware.  If, for some reason, you are unhappy with your OEM version, contact the seller.

  • It's nowdays perfectly OK to sell OEM Windows XP without computer system.
(note, this does not apply to OEM office, which has different rules)

However, when you buy such OEM copy, you, the person who installs it to the computer, becomes the System Builder. Any support etc you have to ask from the System Builder, i.e. yourself.

So basically you have unsupported copy, which can't be transferred between computers, and which becomes a doorstop if your motherboard decides to die and you can't get an in-warranty replacement.
