unable to start virtual machine on virtual pc 2007 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have just installed virtual pc 2007 on windows vista ultimate but I am unable to run any virtual machines. Whenever I try to run a virtual machine or open the settings page, it pops up an error message saying that it is used by another program or marked read-only. In my case, it is neither (the virtual machine file is NOT read-only) and no other program is using it (what other program could be using it??). So what could be the problem?

    Anyone solved this issue before?
BTW The virtual machine i am trying to add is from the 2541 courseware.

First make sure that you've installed VPC 2007 with SP1: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=28C97D22-6EB8-4A09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5&displaylang=en

Two...  You say that you're trying to import the Virtual Machine from the courseware, the virtual machines, what state are they in?  You may have to create a new machine and import the hard drive of the virtual machine instead of importing the whole machine (setting as well as the virtual hard drive).

  • Thanks Ken.

I later found out that I had to right-click on the Virtual PC program shortcut in the Start Menu and Run as Administrator. It didn't occur to me that I had to run the program as an Administrator because I was logged in as Administrator in the first place.
