HELP! Is my OS genuine? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was completely niave when I bought my computer on EBAY.  I bid on a computer that said DELL computer with Windows 7. When I received it, I failed to see the VISTA sticker on the computer.  It wasn't for several months before I noticed it.  Things were fine until my son was playing with the computer and clicked on an update download and then the pop up in the right hand lower corner said Windows is not genuine.  I contacted the seller through EBAY.  He didn't answer me so I sent 2 more emails complaining to him.  He finally emailed me back but through my regular email account NOT EBAY.  He asked me to allow him access to my computer remotely and he would fix the problem easily.  Again, as I am way too trusting, I allowed it.  He said I could watch everything he was doing and I needed to help with certain steps.  He assureed me he could not get any of my personal info by doing this.  He fixed the problem and told me to disable updates, since my son had enabled them.  I thought my son had done something wrong.  Later I spoke with my nephew who is computer saavy and he said I was scammed and that I need those updates to keep my computer safe and running properly and that I should contact the seller and demand my money back.  I never did that as I am not a confrontational person and felt he would just bullsh*t his way out of it again.  Bottom line...

Is my Windows Ultimate legit?  If not how can I get it to be legit?  I can not afford to buy Windows Ultimate and didn't really need Ultimate to begin with.  I don't want to lose all of my info already stored on my computer.  Please HELP!  I'm sorry I am so computer illiterate.

  • The Vista sticker is not of itself a problem.  This computer was manufactured around the time OEMs were shipping with Vista and providing a free copy of Windows 7 when it was ready.  That is not the problem.  The problem is with the person on eBay who sold you the computer.  They used an illegitmate copy of Windows 7 to enhance saleability of the computer.

Your product key has been blacklisted by Microsoft.  See the article here (shortened)

    http://bit.ly/f4lmmo

Your copy of Window 7 is an OEM SLP copy.  OEM SLP copies are not legitimately available any other way than preinstalled on a computer at the time of manufacture.  But this copy of Windows 7 could not have been preinstalled at the factory.

    <Date>20090717000000.000000+000 (Manufactured on July 17, 2009)

Your computer was manufactured five days before Windows 7 was released to manufacturers (July 22, 2009) so it could not have shipped with an OEM SLP copy of Windows 7.  You can never activate this copy of Windows.

You need to buy a retail copy of Windows 7 or obtain recovery disks from Dell and restore Vista.
