Continued problem with Activation (i.e. "This copy of Windows is not genuine") RRS feed

  • Question

  • Since I have had no success getting an answer from my first posting, I thought if I posted again, I might get an answer.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I have an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It worked fine and dandy until last week when I upgraded the drivers for my video card. I then started getting the activation window popping up...and when I tried to activate it, it failed, telling me my product key was invalid. I then discovered that my video card actually had a hardware problem and thus replaced it with another one. I also reinstalled Vista in the process. It worked fine for a few days, but yesterday the activation started coming up again. I still am not able to activate it online and I called tech support only to be told that I would have to pay $59 to get help from an actual technician. He even told me my product key was valid.
I followed the advice from another thread and downloaded the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic tool. Here were the results:

As you can see, it says the license is invalid, however, the person I spoke with earlier from tech support told me I had a valid product key.

What do I need to do to get my VALID copy of Vista working. I'm not paying any more money for something that should never be broken in the first place.

    @@@@@@@@@

I was then told to do this procedure, which did not fix my problem.

    1) Open an Internet Browser

    2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc   (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Reboot Twice

    12) You will likely be asked to enter a Product Key. Use th one found on the sticker on the side or bottom of the computer

I did the above and also installed the Service Pack for Vista. I am now still getting the Activation window when I start up, but when I click Activate Now it says that this copy of Windows does not pass as genuine. It then takes me to a website to purchase the Genuine Advantage Kit for $119 (which I am not going to do).

Should I run the above again now that I have installed the service pack?

Meanwhile, I am going to just keep clicking Activate Later until it lets me activate it.

It has been three days and I fear that I will no longer be able to click "Activate Later" soon and be stuck back at square one.  I was told to post my question here, however, it does not seem to be getting me anywhere.

  • OK, this is not the way it should work. Your Vista is Non-Genuine because it's not Activated, being Non-Genuine due to non-activation should not block you from activating.  I have a notion that Vista thinks it's Non-Genuine for some other reason.  Most Likely it has the Non-Genuine status cached from that Licensing Store issue we just resolved.

To get Vista to update it's cached Non-Genuine status, try going to http://microsoft.com/genuine and then click the Validate Windows button. Whatever the site finds should take presidents over whatever Vista thinks is the problem.

After that, try to Activate again.

If that doesn't work, then the issue may be something else.

The below steps will "Rearm" the Activation Grace Period for another 30 days. Since to be Non-Genuine due to non-activation, Vista must be both a) Not Activated and b) past the Activation Grace Period. By rearming the Grace Period, Vista is no longer past the Grace Period and therefore should no longer be Non-Genuine.

If everything goes as I hope, after you follow the steps, you should be able to Activate by Phone without an error (cross fingers)

    1) Login to Vista in Normal Mode
    2) Launch an Internet Browser
    3) Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field
    4) Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe
    5) Right-click the file and select Run as Administrator
    6) In the CMD window, type: slmgr -rearm

(Note: the slmgr -rearm command can only be used 3 times)

    Thank you,

  • Hello nellered,

In your original thread, I asked if you would  re-run the Diagnostic Report  so I may see if anything has changed after trying those steps.  Is the above Report current or is it the old Report?

In addition, I want to confirm that when you tried the steps, you did run the CMD.exe as Administrator (very importent) and also did you receive any errors when trying the steps? If so, what were they?

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hi nellered,

OK now we're cooking, the new Diagnostic Report shows that somthing did change for the better.

    Notification Reason: 0xC004F200 (non-genuine).

So, the Licensing Store issue does appear to be resolved. The only other issue I see is "Cached Validation Code: 0xc004c4a8" which is just the standard code meaning Vista is in an Unactivated state and the activation grace period has expired.

At this point, would you reboot and then try the below steps for Activating by Phone. (I know you tried activating already, but please try the below steps, after rebooting. My feeling is it should work now that the Licensing store appears to now be functional and Vista has been rebooted).

    Activate by Phone:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type slui 4 in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

    Thanks,
    Darin

NOTE: The important thing to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to transfer you to a Live Rep.

  • Hi again Darin,

I did as you suggested and rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the screen that says Activate now or Activate Later. If I click Activate now, I get the following message:

"This copy of Windows is not genuine.

The copy of Windows you are using does not pass genuine validation. To use Windows features, your copy of Windows must be validated as genuine now."

Below this message is an option to "Go online and resolve now". If I click this option, it takes me to this website where it asks me to purchase Windows Genuine Advantage Kit. There is no option to activate by phone on any of these screens.

After closing out of that, the desktop comes up and I am able to click Start and type slui 4 in search. It brings up the same "This copy of Windows is not genuine" window with the same options. Again, no option to activate by phone.

Do you have any other suggestions?

    Thank you.

  • Hello Darin

Clicking Validate Windows on that site seems to have done the trick. When I rebooted, I no longer was asked to Activate Now and there is no notice saying my version of Windows is not genuine.

Thank you very much for your time and patience.
