Windows no longer genuine error. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have had this copy of Windows 7 professional since before service pack 1. I reformat often and never have a problem. Last time i reformated was in december. Today I was using my computer like normal and suddenly I got "error code 0xC004C020".  I am 100% positive that this version of windows is legit as i received it from my university. I would get another key from them but they no longer offer the service to me since I am no longer taking a class which requires a windows computer.  I was under the impression that this key would never expire as long as I had it.  Anyway,, here is my log.  It appears that the error code changed, origionally I rebooted thinking maybe something got currupt and when I got back the 3 day activation appears to have ended, even though it was like 5 minutes.

By the look of it, it simply needs telephone activation
    telephone activation (operator calls)
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.
Once activation is complete, and before you let the operator off the hook, go to the validation website at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate and check that everything is OK.

Post a new MGADiag report so we can check the result.

    That looks OK now.
How certain are you that it was activated in the first place?
If you reformat ‘often’ then there’s every likelihood that at some point MS will require telephone activation to confirm your rights to the license – you should create an image of your basic activated install, and restore the image, rather than reinstall, for many reasons not least of which is that it takes a lot less time!
This is especially the case with MAK Keys, which don’t actually belong to you, but to the issuing authority (your school/college, in your case) – if they renounce the Key you will no longer be able to activate it, although current activations should still be valid.

  • I guess that it is possible it was never activated in the first place (I remember it saying it would automatically activate when I had internet), I used it for several months without problem though.  I created a system image now, I did not realize my key, being a MAK key, worked that way. Thanks for the info, I always thought it was a pain reinstalling over 100 updates everytime I broke my computer.
