  • Question

  • I am having trouble with Vista Ultimate.  I keep getting a message that this is a non genuine version of the product.  I purchased the product at Best Buy on January 30.

    I ran the diagnostic and this is what it says:

  • I've been running MapleStory too, but GameGuard doesn't update automatically though it does do something at startup that looks like an update.  Our understanding is that MapleStory must request the newest version of GameGuard and update its servers.  We're in contact with INCA, GameGuard's company, and we're waiting to hear back from them on when they're planning on pushing out the fix to all their clients.  You certainly shouldn't expect to have to work around this indefinately.  I'm really grateful for your patience on this issue.  Thanks again

  • Are you running any of the applications mentioned below?

    There are several threads in this forum that refer to Error 0xc004d401 causing non-genuine status or preventing activation.  In those threads, we have discussed 3 applications that have been identified as conflicting with Vista software licensing technology (which causes the issue).  Please find an update below for each:

    * PC Tools Spyware Doctor

    PC Tools notified us today that they have posted a new verison of Spyware Doctor on their web-site that no longer manifests the issue. Great thanks to the PC Tools folks for their very responsive help in making the change!

    * Trend Micro Internet Security (incl. PC-Cillin Anti-Virus)

    The issue has only been known to arise when upgrading from XP to Vista.  Versions of Trend Micro Internet Security 14.56 and greater do not manifest the 0xc004d041 error.  If you receive the error and are running this application, please download and install the latest version of Trend Micro's software.

    * nProtect GameGuard

    This issue was uncovered only recently. Our security protection team is attempting to contact nProtect to discuss the issue (per the latest status I have, which is nearly 1 week old). I'm hopeful that we've already made contact and are discussing -- I'll ping the protection team for more details.

    Thanks everyone! Rich

    If not, please go here https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?c1=509&gprid=9860 and open a free service request.  Once you do that you'll get an SR number which I'd like you to post here.  I can then contact you by e-mail.

    Thanks!

  • Ok, I have it activated now, everytime I play maplestory (load gameguard) I still get the same error. I found that if I restart afterwords all is good, kind of a poor workaround though. I am assuming I just need to wait till gameguard updates and becomes , um, Vista friendly?

    Correct, all we can do at this point is wait until Gameguard releases a compatible version :(

  • gr8rdane,

    It is the responsibility of you, the computer owner, to check that programs you want to install are compatible with the Operating System that is installed on your computer.  This is a prudent precaution at all times, but much more so during the first few weeks and months of the launch of a new operating system.

    In your case you are very lucky in that the incompatibility was discovered only hours after you purchsed the computer.  You did not have time to install many other programs and accumulate weeks or months of documents, email, pix, etc that would be put at risk by an ill-advised installation of incompatible software.

    As I advised in another post, your solution is the manufacturer's recovery process which will put the computer back into "out-of-the-box" condition" in less than 30 minutes, on average.

  • It turns out that GameGuard has in fact implemented a fix, but because of their distribution model you'll need to approach your game's company and ask them to request an update from INCA (GameGuard).

  • Go here: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click Validate Windows.

    Thanks!

  • You don't get it. After nProtect changes the validation, we can try to re-validate all day long and it says we failed it.

  • Can you tell me what game you're using?  Also, can you tell me how you found out that that game updated their version of GameGuard?  I will try to follow up with them to let them know it's still causing issues.

    Even if it hasn't updated, you should be able to reboot and revalidate with no problem as l the only thing blocking your validation is GameGuard.   Just make sure to validate (click "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine) after you reboot and before you run the game.  That works whether or not there is an update.  Thanks for following up!

  • We are all playing Maplestory (mapleglobal.com) and GameGuard updates regulary. We can see it load updates when we load the game, it has a popup that shows the update loading. This is not something we cannot work around, but should we be forced to do a work around forever??
