Say Windows 7 is not genuine but it is.

Question
-
My motherboard went bad and had to be replaced which i did myself. My new motherboard had a different CPU socket so that had to be upgraded as well. When I tried to run the computer, it wouldn't recognize the hard drive for some reason so I had to reformat and re-install windows from the disk given from the manufacturer that built my PC. The windows is genuine and on the same PC with added parts.

the motherboard change invalidated your OEM license.
an OEM license can not be transferred to a new motherboard, except for defect. in that case you are supposed to use the manufacturer specified replacement.
try phone activation and speak to an activation rep. explain the circumstances of the motherboard change and hope they will activate it for you.
How to activate Windows 7 manually (activate by phone)
1) Click Start, and in the Search box type: slui.exe 4
2) Next press the 'ENTER' key
3) Select your 'Country' from the list.
4) Choose the 'Phone Activation' option.
5) Stay on the phone (do not respond to any of the automated prompts) and wait for a person to help you with activation.
6) Explain your issue clearly to the support person.
(also an OEM SLP key will not work on a retail motherboard.)

I have done up to step 3. It doesn't give me an option to select a 'Country'. It says, 'The Windows 7 Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation.' It only gives me three options. 1) Buy a new product key online. 2) Type a different product key. 3) Contact Microsoft to help resolve the problem. I do not have or know where to get a number to (activate by phone). The motherboard that came with the computer was defective and is not in production any longer so I chose a replacement myself. I was not aware that it was necessary that I must have a manufacturer specified replacement.Wednesday, December 12, 2012 12:31 AM
