Is My data lost?

Question
-
I shutdown my WHS for about 24hrs and when i restarted the server it could not find \windows\system32\config. I decided to do a server reinstall instead of troubleshooting that error. During the reinstall the setup failed with a cryptic error. I shutdown the server and replaced the system drive with another drive. This time my options were new installation and recover server (cant remember exactly but it was not reinstall WHS). I load all my storage drivers as all my data sits on raid 5 arrays and start the recover server setup. This runs for a couple of hours and completes without any errors. I complete all windows and driver updates. Now here is the problem;
WHS is reporting that i have no backups for any of the computers (all of which show up on the computers tab). I tried running a repair and WHS said it lost all my backups due to unknow errors.....when i browse to c:\fs\... i see my 2 mount points and what looks like my backup data.....how do i go about restoring this data into whs?
Fun stuff!

There was to much data corruption to recover any of my data. I had to rebuild WHS from scratch and lost all my data. Highly suggest everyone duplicate their data!!

Generally yes, it is lost if any of the backup database was on the system drive. It is meant to be a losable - there isn't a way to recover the backup database.Wednesday, May 5, 2010 8:43 PM

Is there anyway to try and import the backup database manually?Wednesday, May 5, 2010 11:55 PM

You can try with the BDBB addin, but I'd expect it probably won't work without the entire databaseThursday, May 6, 2010 8:55 PM

You can try the following procedure, if you have still the old disk and did not overwrite the backup database files on the other disks:
net stop pdl
net stop whsbackup
xcopy e:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\*.* d:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} (assuming your old system disk is attached as drive e:)
net start pdl
net start whsbackupThis can lead to the situation, that you attempt to overwrite some real files also with no longer valid tombstones, so it may be better to copy the original files from d: and eventually from C:\FS\<mountedrive>\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4} away first with the intent to put those back to d:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}, if necessary.
If this fails to restore an accessible backup database for you and also a reboot does not help you should stop the services again and delete all files in the mentioned folder on D: before resuming normal usage.

Duplicating the backup database (the part you mentioned you had problems with) isn't possible OOTB. There is an add-in called BDBB that has that functionality, or it can be done manually by following the steps in the Backup and Restore Technical Brief.Sunday, May 16, 2010 5:05 PMModerator
