I have had this computer for a few years and this is the first time Microsoft has asked me to validate my Windows. I recently tried to download microsoft software so maybe that is why it is asking now. It says my copy of windows isn't genuine when I know that it is. It came built-in to my computer when I purchased it. However, about 7-8 months ago I had to get the motherboard replaced because it stopped working so maybe this is affecting my windows validation.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Key in use here is the Default Key for Vista - and the motherboard is a retail one.
Technically, changing the motherboard outside warranty conditions invalidates an OEM license - which is what you get when you purchase Windows pre-installed on a computer.
You can try changing the Key to the one on your COA sticker, and then activating that - but it's in the lap of the gods (and an MS operator) as to whether MS allow it.
To change the Key, click on teh Start button, and type
SLUI 3
in the Search box - follow the instructions (you may need to activate by phone)

Look here for examples....

On desktops, they are usually at the back, or on the side panel.
On laptops, they are usually on the bottom, (or lately, some manufacturers put them inside the battery compartment)
