Cannot install FixIt RRS feed

  • Question

  • XP 32 bit, SP3. Several attempts to install Fix It fail. and get pop up during installation I receive the following:

"An unexpected error has occurred. Setup cannot continue. Please close and try again"

There is no error code and nothing in event viewer that would give me direction to go. MATS is absent in "Services" so it's not a matter of starting a service. It is simply not there. I had Fix it until about four months ago. Dell tech removed and ran a bunch of programs with an unrelated problem. Fix It disappeared and I cannot reinstall it.

  • Hi Vishnu,

Thanks for your information. Your computer encountered this problem due to the presence of the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf" settings in its system configuration store, called registry. The setting was probably added by antimalware software to thwart malware on removable devices. Such anti-malware measure unconditionally blocks other uses of autorun.inf, including legitimate ones. The setup program of the Fix it Center application is one that is affected by this added setting. To work around the setup problem with the Fix it Center application, please temporarily have the registry settings renamed during the course of installing the Fix it Center application. To do so, you may rename the settings with Registry Editor (regedit.exe). For those of you who do not know how to use Registry Editor, you may follow the below steps:

    1. For users on Windows Vista or Windows 7, hit the Start button. Enter cmd.exe into the text box on the Start menu. You will see an icon shown on the menu. Right click on the icon and select "Run as administrator". Follow the instructions on screen to proceed with authorizing the launch of the Command Prompt as an application with administrative rights. For users on Windows XP, simply hit the Start+R key, type in cmd.exe and then hit Enter.

    2. In the command window, type the next line and hit Enter:

    reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf"

    3. If you see in the window a line that says "ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.", skip to step #6. Otherwise, record what is shown after REG_SZ in the outputs of the previous command. We will need that text again in step #8.

    4. In the command window, type the next line and hit Enter:

    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf"

    5. When asked whether to delete the registry key permanently, type in "y" without quotes and hit Enter.

    6. Reboot the computer.

    7. Proceed with installing the Fix it Center application by going to http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/portal.

    8. If step #4 has been skipped, skip this step too. Otherwise, reinstate the original registry settings (only needed if the registry key was originally there) by typing the next line into the command window and hitting Enter:

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf" /ve /d @SYS:DoesNotExist. You may replace @SYS:DoesNotExist in the above line with the value shown after REG_SZ in the command window back from step #2.

  • Don't feel bad, I get the exact same message on the brand new Windows 8 Pro,  64 Bit, not an up grade but a fresh install. I also am stuck in limbo with this and almost ready to through away all and everything that has to do with Microsoft..

  • Daniel Chows Solution Worked on my Vista Laptop But

I Did have to turn off Zone Alarm. Zone alarm likes to disable exe downloads.

After the fixit file is downloaded it must be displayed with the little fixit guy icon.

if the little guy isnt there then the download is no good.

    Thanks guys
