  • Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications Options Error - There was an error verifying that Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is installed on your computer. Ensure that your computer has Internet Explorer, with Javascript and ActiveX scripting enabled.

That's my problem right there in a nutshell. I'm in the process of getting my copy of windows validated and I have ran into all sorts of problems. At present I'm told that I'm going to need to do a fresh install and retry validation. At this point that is not an option as I have data on this PC I do not wish to format and I am not currently able to back it up.

For the time being I simply want to disable the hourly popup reminding me that this copy of windows failed valiation as it is interefering with most of the programs I run and causing me no end of trouble.

Simple request eh? Just right click the WGA Icon in the tray and select "Change notifaction settings" right? Wrong.

Apon sdoing so I am greeted with a page saying "There was an error verifying that Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is installed on your computer. Ensure that your computer has Internet Explorer, with Javascript and ActiveX scripting enabled."

So I've run all the lovely test to ensure both Javascript and ActiveX are working (According to both your site and a few otehrs they are) I've re-installed WGA from your site to make sure it hasn't been corrupted, I've rebotted my computer for the uptenth time and I still get this page every time.

I've tried opening this page with other browsers just to be sure. Both Mozilla Firefox 3.0.3 and Internet explorer give the same proglem.

All I want to do is stop this popup. How can i do this with the above problem?

  • Thomasuwoo,

Thank you for posting your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool information. We are sorry to hear about the situation you are currently experiencing. Validation problems of different natures can arise from not having a valid Product Key on your OS. The diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue.

The Windows XP Pro Product Key installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The Product Key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a Product Key generator. The Product Key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA).

There are situations which can cause Windows XP to become non-genuine. Let me give one example.  Customers have taken in their systems for service along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola’ no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a Keygen’d Product Key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months, or even a year or more then suddenly become blocked.

This is why you may be seeing the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications Options Error - There was an error verifying that Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is installed on your computer. Ensure that your computer has Internet Explorer, with Javascript and ActiveX scripting enabled." messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall Windows XP Pro  before any further complications occur from being non-genuine.

Under NO circumstances should someone try to download/distribute ISO images for software from a P2P file sharing site or use a second-hand burned copies of software. Research has shown that about half of the software copies available on P2P download sites are infected with root kits, spyware, Trojans, and other potentially harmful malware. One file in particular was very alarming.  This file was an administrator account giving the attacker full control over both your system and data.  I would be very concerned about your system integrity because Windows is non-genuine.

As a customer there are several options available for you to get to a “Genuine” status. For details on the ways to get “Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details. It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Here is the link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

If this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you, who have become victims, to report piracy at the following link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/default.aspx

Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise off-load any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/re-imaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive.

Thank you for visiting the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum.

  • Update: Have been going over my update history at http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/
I've noticed that there are two instances of Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) listed.
The first: Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) did not install properly (shows the cancelled symbol)
the seccond: Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) was perfromed the same day by the same method (Automatic Updates)
Is it possible my version has been corrupted some way? The normal method i'd employ when a program fails to install is remove it complely and try again, which as we all know is not an option in this instance.
I've tried re-installing the WGA tool but the problem still persists.

  • In addition, to address your main question:

Removing/Uninstalling WGA Software is out of scope for the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum.

Genuine Microsoft software is published by Microsoft, properly licensed, and supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. By using genuine Microsoft software, you can be confident that your software is legitimate and fully supported by Microsoft. Microsoft is working to protect consumers against counterfeit and pirated software.

The Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum does not support the removing or uninstalling of Windows Genuine Advantage software.

  • I am not impressed with the copy and paste reply I recived there. Half that document stated what i already knew and had also covered in my initial post. The followup post also seems to be dodging my initial problem.

As i stated before I KNOW that this copy isn't genuine. I'm in the process of rectifying this. I have a genuine key and install and judging by what I'm seeing now it's been removed during a service of my computer in the past.

I KNOW i'm going to have to re-install windows and format my computer but right now this is not a possibility as I have no means to back up the data on my system at present.

What I want to know is how can I change the the notification settings to stop the hourly popup as it is not only annoying but crashing some programs I use. When I attempt to change the notification settings the page I am sent to displays the following:

    Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications Options

There was an error verifying that Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is installed on your computer. Ensure that your computer has Internet Explorer, with Javascript and ActiveX scripting enabled.

Diagnose configuration problems with Internet Explorer.

    [0x80082200]

I have done my best to ensure that activex and Javascript are enable, Your testing page says they are, but I still get this error when trying to change the settings. How else can I change these settings?
