  • Provided you have access to the CRM Server, Disk or GAC plugin deployment can be used as follows:

    1. Disk - place plugin assembly and dependent assemblies (if such exist) in the <CRM Deployment folder>\Server\bin\assembly folder.  Register plugin on Disk, loading from that folder
    2. GAC - place plugin assembly and dependent assemblies in the GAC.  Register plugin as GAC

Disk based deployment was often used to enable "drag-n-drop" updates of plugin assemblies during development and was useful during debugging; however you can debug a database hosted plugin, so it is of limited use.

I never register plugins anywhere but in the database, because:

    • Updating a database hosted plugin is not difficult
    • Debugging is as easy with a database hosted plugin as with other deployment methods
    • Once registered in the database, the plugin becomes an component of the CRM Organisation, instead of remaining an external component (will be included in DB backups, distributed in SQL Server cluster etc)
