Not being prompted for user/password for folder shares

Question

I just recently finished building a WHS and have started having some problems related to user accounts. This is the problem I am having:
At first my Father's laptop was being denied access to the write files as well as denied access to view other folders then my computer started having the same problem. From what I can tell this occurs when I, as well as my father, is not prompted to log in to the server. Usually when I would start up my computer the Windows Home Server Connector program that runs in the tray would notify me that my account (my local user account) was not found on the server.
I understand why the connector program notifies me, its because my local user account logon name is different than any account listed on the server. I understand that fact and I am totally fine with having to logon to the server every Windows session because I don't restart my computer often. But now I can tell that when I start up my computer and Connector program never alerts me about the using an unlisted account, I am going to be denied access to the folders before I even click on the shortcut link to the server. It would seem that XP is automatically logging me into the server with my local user account resulting in my being denied access. So my questions are:
Is there anyway to ensure that XP and Vista, will prompt me for a password every time I try to connect to the shared folders? At least for the shortcut on my desktop, obviously not for mapped drives as well. Also..
Is it required or strongly recommended that my WHS account matches my local account? (Everything was fine with different accounts for several days on my PC and my Father's. From what I have read is that its recommended for simplicity sake.)
I right-clicked on the shortcut to the server and after clicking on the advanced button noticed the option of "run with a different set of credentials" was grayed out. Would enabling that option solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.Monday, December 28, 2009 8:46 AM

It's strongly recommended that your local ID match with an ID on your server, yes. This allows for seamless access (and access control) without the user having to do anything special. This is mostly a matter of convenience, but if you don't have matching accounts, it can be difficult to control what credentials actually do get used at the time you make a connection to your server.
Worth taking a look at, if you're using Windows XP Professional (this isn't available in XP Home; in that case you should just match IDs and passwords with your server):- Click on Start, then Run..., then type control userpasswords2. Press Enter.
- Click on the Advanced tab.
- Click on the Manage Passwords button.
You should see a list of servers for which you've saved credentials, and should be able to edit/remove your server from the list.

I did go ahead and change my user name on my local client to match the user name on the server and that seemed to work for this computer, I haven't tried it on my fathers laptop or the other computers in the house.
I checked for stored passwords, there are none to be found.
I am not a big fan of everything logging in automatically even if the user names match between the server and my local client. Is there a way to have the login prompt displayed even if the user and passwords between the server and local client match? I would like to have that little extra bit more sense of security.Monday, December 28, 2009 4:46 PM -

No, there's no way I'm aware of to force an authentication prompt in this environment. This is Windows workgroup functionality, not Windows Home Server, unfortunately.
