Post a thread URL here if you tried answering a question and no one noticed (part 2)

General discussion
-
So this is Part 2. Part 1 got too long, so I locked it: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/Profile/thread/7cdc3396-a705-4186-837f-a8a6e195b726
I'm going to try something different, since this is a community. We have this Achievement and Recognition system, but it doesn't do any good if no one notices your work, right? The forum world is huge out there, and it seems that a lot of threads go by without anyone noticing what's happening on them. So...
If you ever tried answering a question, and no one noticed, then post your Forum thread URL here (for any forum that's tied into the profile system)... if you meet the following conditions:
1 - The Asker (or someone else) has not explained why your answer attempt does not solve the issue.
2 - Nobody (including yourself) has proposed your reply as an answer.
It is okay to include a thread if someone else's reply is proposed or marked as an answer (you might feel like you have a better answer).
Then as a community, we will go through these threads and help you out when appropriate by either...
1. Proposing your reply as an answer (if we think it actually answers the question)
AND/OR
2. Voting your post as helpful (if we think it is actually helpful)
Since this is part 2, I refined this process slightly. If this idea doesn't work for any reason, I'll update this post to make it clear that we stopped trying this approach (that the thread is closed), and I will lock the thread.
NOTE: If you want to try this out, please mark this post as Helpful.
Thanks!

Thanks again Ed.

On this thread atomy suggested the answer which resolved mine and several other people's issue. But although proposed as an answer by DianaGh, it was not one of the ones marked as an answer, whereas a reply thanking atomy was in fact marked as an answer.

7 good answers! Well we can keep pinging on it (and here) until a Moderator notices. I'm sure Richard or Rich will eventually pick some (it's kind of cool that two Moderators responded to that thread). Thanks, Karl!

Usually when I came to situation like this in the forum I moderate, I unmark the last response and mark 2 other responses. So, the moderator in this forum should probably do the same.

I'm a moderator in the forum with the thread Karl referenced earlier. A few points:
- I feel the best outcome is always for the OP to mark answers. They should be the best judge, although it seems to rarely happen.
- I always wait a few days to give the OP time. Sometimes they come back. In the meantime I like to mark proposed answers as a hint. In the example I much appreciate Karl doing this.
- My personal policy is to not mark my own replies as answers.
This particular example is not very old, and it is a holiday period. I would agree that there are several good replies. If the OP doesn't come back soon, I'll mark answers (I liked Karl's link).
Richard Mueller - MVP Directory Services
I typically wait a week. I make statments, propose what makes the most sense (usually after the asker has already had time to respond but hasn't), and then I return a week later to mark an answer. So I think waiting a week is a good practice (it's hard to argue against that).

So the problem here is that we can't mark any answers (this thread is only about voting and proposing... not marking). Only the forum moderators (or asker) can mark answers. But I went ahead and voted your answers as helpful and proposed those that weren't yet proposed. I also left replies to encourage askers to mark the answers.Another solution (also off topic for this thread) is whether you want to be (and should be) a moderator. If so, send me an email and sell me on it (edprice at microsoft).

Josh Ash
True. Anyone can. That's why this thread exists. Because we can help.
What is this achieving? More replies that are marked as helpful and proposed as answers! A way for someone who's work is not noticed to become noticed!
These features exist, and they are not being used to one tenth of their value and potential.
That said, I understand that what people want the most is to have their questions marked as answers (when they are answers).
These features (such as Proposed Answers) are only useful if the forum has a healthy community/group of Moderators. Creating a thread about marking answers is problematic. Hasham attempted a similar subject, and you can go check it out (http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/Profile/thread/5e2fd4fd-b28a-4333-bd26-33a1dbcc2f3b). But the problem is that unless you're talking about a thread in one of my few forums where I'm a Moderator, I can't do anything about it. Most folks are in that boat. (You can see in Hasham's thread that they thought they'd get support by posting links to issues, but no Moderators from their forum read it, and thus, no support. So they voiced frustration about that.)
The root problem here is making sure each forum has a healthy and active group of Moderators. If that was the case, then yes, proposing answers would help them. But that's a separate topic. I'll start a thread in the Forums Issues forum on that topic.
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Ed much appreciated! The forums I frequent have a pretty healthy amount of moderators - I wasn't aware that a lot of forums have an issue with this. The SSRS forum even has Microsoft contracted staff who do a great job both answering questions and marking answers.
Even better is involvement by the product teams in their forums, it's great to have their insight and assistance. In terms of your point on making sure each forum has an active group of moderators, it would also be great to see regular participation by product teams in moderation, but more importantly in contribution.
Participation by product team members is something I highly value and would love to see more of.. not sure if it's a priority? It also seems like something that varies from forum to forum.
Cheers

Product teams... that's a big issue, yes. As far as SQL goes (since you and I are both in that space), we are actively recruiting and enabling this. I'll pass your request onto the Community team. Is this specific to SSRS? Other SQL forums as well?

If a moderator marks their own reply as the answer (irrespective of whether someone else has proposed it as an answer), the moderator does not get due recognition for providing the answer i.e. no points are awarded. This is the issue I'm currently experiencing in the Training and Certification forum (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/CertGeneral/threads).
I have quite a large number of threads (going back 5-6 weeks) where my reply has been marked as the proposed answer however OP's are not returning to mark their question as answered and other Moderators (and Answerers) are also not servicing the forum and marking answers (hence the reason why I’m now a Moderator on that forum). I have gone back 3 months and marked questions answered where appropriate, just none of mine.
I will eventually mark my replies as the answer (where someone has proposed it as the answer) however it would be good if I could get the same level of recognition that I give others when marking questions as answered :-)

Hello Ed,
Here is a simple question, where to edit a setting in Group Policy for a 2008 r2 server. I reply with the path (for server 2008r2). Then the user said he can't find the GPO setting because he has a 2003 Domain controllers, what can he do. Then Martin reponds to edit the local policy of the 2008 r2 (correct). But considering that I provided the path to that setting I think I should get at least a Helpful vote...

Hi Ed
It may just be my own perception but I really feel that product team participation has fallen away quite a bit in most of the SQL Forums - the exception to this is pre-release products where I notice a fair amount of product team participation and feedback/answers to questions.
It is a great way for Microsoft technical staff to connect in an informal way with their customer base, especially the technical people who work with their products.
I really think there should be more of it.
Thanks for your response,
Josh

Josh,
Agreed. Their focus is on doing their job, and so answering questions might seem to get in the way of that. So we're talking to managers and having conversations about community being integrated more into their jobs. The pre-release products make more sense because they're trying to get feedback before they finalize the release.
Thanks!

Yes, thread type can be changed from Discussion to Question or the other way around. Moderators can change the thread type as appropriate.

That's a valid point Norkk. I am in agreement with your views.
>> Send this links here, for any moderator of those forums change it is proper?
Not sure how effective that will be ? I don't think, moderators from every forum comes here (this forum) and visit this thread.
A possible workaround which I think would be to bump such threads and ask OP to change the thread type to question [most of the times, that would be an unfruitful effort as OP never bothers to reply/change the abandoned thread] or if a moderator is around during that time, he/she might change the thread type and propose/mark answers.Anyone else have thoughts on this ?

My point is that are many threads like this on C# General, C# Language forum. Send this links here, for any moderator of those forums change it is proper?
No. This thread is only for proposing answers and for voting posts as helpful. As Santosh mentions, you need to get a Moderator's attention for that specific forum.
First, you can start a new discussion asking moderators to start changing Discussions to Questions if they're really questions. In fact, I can do that for you, if you'd like. Please link to the forums where that's a problem.
Second, as Santosh mentions, requesting on that thread for a mod to change it actually sometimes works. I even call out a specific moderator sometimes when I know they're super proactive and reading each thread.
Third, if the above two don't work, it likely means we need more proactive moderation in that forum. Then come to me (send me an email at edprice at Microsoft) and we'll see about what kind of moderation is still needed in those forums. It's basically like building a team of moderators.
Thanks!

Hemendra,
I proposed and voted your responses accordingly. Two have been marked since then, so far.
I want to make it clear that this thread is for proposing and voting answers, not for marking them. That must be done by forum moderators.
If marking answers is a problem, let me know, give me a forum URL, and I'll start a Discussion there asking the Moderators to mark more answers that have been left proposed for 7 days.
Thanks!

Actually now I'm not really sure if this really belongs here. There are several replies proposed as answer by you Ed and none of them have been marked as answer yet (over a month back now). Probably that guy has just left the forums and will never really mark one answer as answer.

I updated the word "Marking" to "Voting" in #2 of what we provide. I hope that adds to the clarity.
Thanks!

Also, in this thread http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/csharpgeneral/thread/ad53e8cd-afa6-4e55-a18b-f2e24faa5189 I am not sure why the OP didn't mark my reply as answer. Most likely it was due to the 'Unexpected error' bug.
